City Theatre Presents ABIGAIL/1702 by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, 5/4-26

City Theatre ends its 2012-2013 season with Abigail/1702, a juicy sequel about The Crucible's scandalous stage legend, Abigail Williams. Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and directed by Tracy Brigden, Abigail/1702 runs on City Theatre's Mainstage from May 4 - 26, 2013, with an Opening Night performance on Friday, May 10 at 8pm.

Whatever happened to Abigail Williams? It's 1702, a decade after The Crucible's infamous seductress danced with the devil in Salem. Now, the devil returns for a visit, the blood on the gallows is dry, and Abigail hides behind a changed name in a new town. Imagining the destiny of the immortal stage villain who cried "Witch!," this suspenseful drama reveals the accuser's unforeseen fate.

"In 2007, we produced Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's The Muckle Man, a riveting thriller that introducEd Pittsburgh audiences to Roberto's supernatural sensibility," says Tracy Brigden, City Theatre's Artistic Director. "His work effortlessly flirts with the dark side, and his new play Abigail/1702 is a rich drama that boldly imagines what happens to Arthur Miller's fiery troublemaker Abigail Williams ten years after the Salem witch trials. The Crucible includes a footnote, alluding to a legend that Abigail became a prostitute in Boston after fleeing from Salem. Roberto's version takes Abigail-and audiences-in a new direction. The devil comes to town, and, as you can imagine, the plot gets pretty juicy from there."

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama. His plays include: Doctor Cerberus (South Coast Rep, LA Theatre Works), an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (Roundhouse Theatre), King of Shadows (The Working Theatre), Good Boys and True (Steppenwolf, 2econd Stage Theatre, the O'Neill), Based on a Totally True Story (MTC), The Mystery Plays (2econd Stage, Yale Rep, Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award), The Velvet Sky (Woolly Mammoth Theatre), The Muckle Man (City Theatre), Dark Matters (Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre, the O'Neill), Rough Magic (Hangar Theatre), The Weird (Dad's Garage Theatre), and the GLAAD Media Award-nominated comedies, Golden Age and Say You Love Satan. Upcoming projects include: The Dracula Cycle at Dallas Theatre Center and a musical adaption of Bret Easton Ellis's controversial satire American Psycho. He is the co-book writer of Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway, and he wrote a new book for the classic musical It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman! In addition to his playwriting, Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa is a writer on the Golden Globe-winning FOX comedy "Glee," and is also known for his work for Marvel Comics and the Emmy-nominated HBO series "Big Love."

Abigail/1702 features Diane Davis, John Feltch, Deirdre Madigan (A Marriage Minuet, City Theatre, 2008), Zachary Spicer, Kylan Bjornson, and Nels Bjornson. The design team includes Tony Ferrieri (Scenic), Pei Chi Su (Costume), Andrew David Ostrowski (Lighting), and Eric Shimelonis (Sound).

Audiences under 30 may reserve $15 tickets in advance for all performances except Fridays 8pm and Saturdays 5:30pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, tickets are available two hours prior to show time and based on availability.

Seniors age 62 and older may purchase $22 rush tickets at the Box Office beginning two hours before show time.
