Written by August Wilson, Gem of the Ocean is the first chronological play in his ten-play American Century Cycle. Set in 1904 Pittsburgh, the play follows a young man seeking a fresh start who becomes entangled in a local dispute and is taken by 285-year-old spiritual matriarch Aunt Ester on a journey to a mythological city connecting him to his ancestors, his duty to the town, and the love of his life. This five-time Tony Award-nominated play is a powerful and poetic story of redemption, history, and self-determination.
