Road Less Traveled Productions Kicks Off 5th Annual Buffalo Young Writers Contest

Road Less Traveled Productions today announced a Call for Work for its 5th Annual Buffalo Young Writers (BYW) contest. The professionally run, non-profit theatre company encourages Western New York (WNY) area students (ages 15 through 23, currently enrolled in school) to write and submit a ten-minute play. In the 2014 contest, one grand-prize winner (selected by RLTP) will receive $200 cash, a one-year paid membership to the Dramatists Guild of America, and will see their play produced at the Road Less Traveled Theater. Four runners up also will receive readings of their submissions, as well as complementary tickets to RLTP shows.

Keep your eyes peeled next week for the release of the exciting 45 minute documentary on the rehearsal process for freeFall's FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. This exciting collaboration with award winning documentarian Leigh Simons will take you behind the scenes into the rehearsals to give you an unprecedented look at what it takes to bring you freeFall's season. The film will be released as three 15-minute episodes that will be viewed online. Watch all three and you will be able to enter a contest to win a VIP Holiday Party for 10 at the theatre during our run of A Christmas Carol. The documentary will be released in an e-blast this week, as well as be seen on our website (freefalltheatre.com) and Facebook page.

Singer, Actress and Broadway Star Eydie Gormé Dies at 84

Famed singer, actress and Broadway star Eydie Gormé has died at age 84. Spokesperson Howard Bragman said 'Legendary singer and performer Eydie Gorme passed away peacefully today at Sunrise Hospital following a brief illness. She was surrounded by her husband, son and other loved ones at the time of her death.'
In his own statement, Steve Lawrence said: 'Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing. While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time.'

Christel Schmidt, an OSU alum now a film historian for the Library of Congress, will give a brief introduction to this year's CAPA Summer Movie Series silent film selection, The Little American (1917), starring 'America's Sweetheart,' Mary Pickford. Schmidt's specialty is the history of silent film with a focus on the life and career of Mary Pickford, and she will provide some insight on the actress, the pre-screening 14-minute fund-raising short for the US' Fourth Liberty Loan Drive in WWI titled One Hundred Percent American (1918) starring Pickford, and the series premiere of this feature film restoration print from the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
