Review: HARPER LEE'S TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Opens at Nashville's Tennessee Performing Arts Center
by Jeffrey Ellis - Aug 11, 2022

But beloved as it may be, why in the ever-loving hell has it taken so long for To Kill A Mockingbird to become a theatrical play that is actually worthy of its literary heritage? Sure, there’s been a 1990 (?!) version by Christopher Sergel that’s made it way through every high school auditorium, community theater playhouse and reginal theater over the intervening three decades that we are, quite frankly, sick to death of it. In fact, if we never see it again, we’ve seen it far too often: a warmed over, treacly and maudlin rehash that’s far too dependent on the title’s movie roots to really emerge from a darkened theater to become a consummate American play.

Review: CHALKFACE at Dunstan Playhouse, Adelaide Festival Centre
by Barry Lenny - Aug 10, 2022

In a late career change, I gained a degree in Adult and Vocational Education, and then a post-graduate degree in Secondary Education, leading to several years of relief and contract teaching in music and drama for a number of high schools. I was, therefore, looking forward to State Theatre Company's latest production, Chalkface, a black comedy written by Australian playwright, Angela Betzien, produced in conjunction with the Sydney Theatre Company. One of their Resident Directors, Jessica Arthur, directed this hilarious co-production.

Review: NEXT TO NORMAL at Mac-Haydn Theatre
by Marc Savitt - Aug 9, 2022

In their promotional materials for NEXT TO NORMAL, Mac-Haydn, advised it would be “unlike anything you have seen on our stage. Trust us when we tell you, this show is not to be missed.” I am very happy to say they were correct. This production is phenomenal.

Review: SAPAC Opens New Season With FUN HOME
by Robert Encila-Celdran - Aug 9, 2022

Here lies a critical distinction between Middle Alison and Bruce. In spite of the initial tumult around her sexual revelation, she revels in her transparent admission, only to discover that her father has been harboring secrets as a homosexual. His enduring shame from illicit affairs, coupled with his inability to accept the pain caused by his gradual unmooring of ethics (sleeping with hired help and seducing underage students) leads him to a tragic decision to end his own life.
