After three staged readings of three new plays by innovative emerging playwrights of color were presented to enthusiastic audiences at Guild Hall, the votes for the Episcopal Actors' Guild's 12th Annual Barbour Playwrights Award are in. The judges have selected Reynaldo Piniella's Black Doves as this year's winner.

Exquisite Corpse Company is thrilled to announce upcoming festival, THIS IS A DISTRACTION. The festival, a culmination of the ECC's innaugural Playwrights-in-Residence cycle, offers up perspectives of distractions in our modern world. Presented within non-traditional performance space, The Parlour, the festival will feature an art gallery curated by ECC Artistic Director, Tess Howsam, and performances of four original one-act plays.

For National Mental Health Month, four post-play panel discussions have been set for 'A Punk or a Gentleman' by Andrea J. Fulton, which will be presented for its world premiere by Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue, NYC from May 3 to 20. The play explores the complex psyche of a Black, middle-aged Don Juan who loves to captivate women but falls victim to physical abuse by the women he loves. The ten-character drama will be directed by Kymbali Craig for its world premiere. Ms. Fulton was awarded the 2017 Thomas Barbour Award by the Episcopal Actors' Guild for this play.

In her newest play, 'A Punk or a Gentleman,' playwright Andrea J. Fulton explores the complex psyche of a Black, middle-aged Don Juan who loves to captivate women but falls victim to physical abuse by the women he loves. The ten-character drama will be directed by Kymbali Craig for its world premiere, which will be presented by Theater for the New City from May 3 to 20.

The 11th Anniversary Barbour Playwrights Award Begins

In 2007, the Episcopal Actors' Guild established a special award to honor the legacy of actor, playwright and EAG member Thomas Barbour (Arthur, Great White Hope) whose support for emerging artists was an inspiration to many. Eleven years later, the Barbour Playwrights Award has presented staged readings of 30 new plays and given $5,500 to local writers. Wednesdays this month (Women's History Month), The Barbour Playwrights Award continues with readings of three new plays by writers from New Perspectives Theatre Company and their playwrighting program, The Women's Work Project. One of these finalists will be awarded a prize of $500.

10th Anniversary Barbour Playwrights Award to Kick Off with GRAND THEFT MUSICAL

The Barbour Playwrights Award continues this month with readings of three new plays by writers from Theater for the New City, as well as a special night of celebration including a panel discussion with past winners on the life and creative process of today's playwrights. The festival begins today, March 9 at 7:00 pm with a reading of Lissa Moira's Grand Theft Musical, a musical comedy based on Robert Sickinger's 1994 musical Platinum Taps, with music composed by John Taylor Thomas.
