When you think of SOUTH PARK and its no-holds-barred, foul-mouthed humor, you don't tend to think of stories of faith and hope. But, when writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone (along with Robert Lopez of AVENUE Q and FROZEN fame) got together to write a musical based on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (better known as Mormons), that's exactly what resulted. THE BOOK OF MORMON is a satirical masterpiece - and it has become a Broadway sensation.
You gotta admit: A lot has changed in this world since Nashville audiences were first treated to The Book of Mormon two years ago. The extended run in 2014 at Tennessee Performing Arts Center set records for ticket sales, garnered great critical acclaim and knocked the socks off the thousands of people witnessing the bold, brash and irreverent musical for the very first time.
After seeing a villager shot in the face during a missionary trip to Uganda, Elder Price comes to a stunning revelation in the hilarious musical BOOK OF MORMON: 'Africa is nothing like THE LION KING.'

'Helen Lawrence,' now playing at Toronto's Bluma Appel, theatre, is an entertaining, multi-media presentation of a 1940s film noir story hampered by a thin script by Chris Haddock (co-written with Stan Douglas.) During the first five minutes, you tend to be overwhelmed by the show's blue compositing technique in which the live action onstage is enhanced by its larger-than-life, black-and-white close-up projection on a scrim in front of the actors. But the technical ingenuity shortly wears off, and you're left with a complex plot, heavy on exposition and light on action and tension.
After opening in Vancouver in March 2014, and setting off on an international tour with stops in Germany and Scotland, Helen Lawrence lands at Canadian Stage with performances at the Bluma Appel Theatre (27 Front St. E), Oct. 12 to Nov. 2. The theatrical debut for world-renowned visual artist Stan Douglas and award-winning screenwriter Chris Haddock, Helen Lawrence is produced by Canadian Stage with co-producers Arts Club Theatre Company (Vancouver) and The Banff Centre (Alberta). Set in 1948 Vancouver, this ground-breaking work intertwines theatre, visual art and film and mixed-media, to create a production at the frontier of new media use in performance.
Helen Lawrence, a highly anticipated new Canadian production at the frontier of new media use in performance art, marked its world premiere on March 19 in Vancouver before launching an international tour. The mixed-media project, produced by Canadian Stage with co-producers Arts Club Theatre Company (Vancouver) and The Banff Centre (Alberta), will travel across Canada and Europe in 2014 with stops in Montreal, Munich, Edinburgh and Toronto.

Young People's Theatre just announced that Annie (TYA), originally slated to run now through December 19th, will now be extended through Holiday Week, running until December 29th, 2013. BroadwayWorld has new photos from the show below!
It's an exciting holiday theatre season in Toronto, with lots of great options for children and grown ups alike! One option which is bound to appeal to people of all ages is the classic tale of ANNIE - being presented by Young People's Theatre and starring newcomer Jenny Weisz in the iconic role.
You would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't know the story of Annie (or it's timeless tunes such as 'Tomorrow', 'Hard Knock Life' and 'Maybe') but it's been a long time since Toronto had a professional production on stage in the city. In the iconic role is newcomer Jenny Weisz, and 'Annie' marks her very first professional gig after graduating from Theatre Sheridan this past year. BWW sat down to talk with her about playing the famous little redheaded girl, reaching her dream of performing with YPT and her musical theatre influence.
Young People's Theatre presents Louise Pitre as Miss Hannigan and Sterling Jarvis as Oliver Warbucks in its fall production of Annie (TYA), along with Jenny Weisz in the title role. Directed by Allen MacInnis, the iconic musical will be presented on the Mainstage from today, November 11 to December 19, opening on Thursday, November 14.
