Katori Hall’s Olivier-winning play follows Martin Luther King Jr. on his final night on Earth in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel, Memphis. He orders coffee—but what arrives is Camae, a maid with a secret mission. What unfolds is a blend of realism and surrealism that humanizes a mythologized figure and challenges us to see that greatness lies not in perfection, but in perseverance.
Roy Williams’ tight adaptation of Sam Selvon’s 1956 rather meandering novel The Lonely Londoners continues that education. It was a hit when it played at the diminutive Jermyn Street theatre last year. Ebenezer Bamboye’s adaptation now comes to the Kiln Theatre, transporting you to a Bayswater bedsit in the 1950s where four West Indian men are trying to make their way in a city that seems to despise them.

“The city has eyes and it watches your every move.” There’s no time for welcomes for newly arrived Trinidadian immigrant Galahad. Only warnings from street-smart fellow immigrant Moses. The latter has taken the former under his wing; together they will traverse the twisting streets and interminable bustle of 1950s London.

There’s a huge amount going on in a short time in Colin Teevan’s The Seven Pomegranate Seeds, now showing at the Rose Theatre. Seven stories about maternal pain and loss from the women in the plays of Euripides are transported from classic mythology to modern-day scenarios. Despite this intriguing concept, the resulting production feel rushed and fails to live up to its potential.
The Seven Pomegranate Seeds takes seven contemporary stories grounded in prominent, mythical origins. Persephone, Hypsipyle, Medea, Alcestis, Phaedra, Creusa and Demeter, the women of Euripides' plays, are reimagined as people of today in a fusion of celebrity, inappropriate desires, historical police investigations and missing children.
Shannon Hayes will join the previously announced Niamh Cusack in the world premiere of Colin Teevan's The Seven Pomegranate Seeds directed by Melly Still. This will be the second Rose Original production in Christopher Haydon's inaugural season as Rose Theatre's Artistic Director.
