BWW Review: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS: This Plant's No Shrinking Violet

Rachel Bertone has set the bar high for the 45th anniversary season of the Lyric Stage Company with her pitch perfect production of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Assuming the mantle of both director and choreographer, with the dependable Dan Rodriguez as music director by her side, Bertone and her design team capture the grit and the innocence of the story set in the early 1960s, while finding ways to punctuate it with flashes of contemporary pizzazz. Puppet designer Cameron McEachern has crafted an Audrey II without gender bias on its menu, and despite being voiced by a woman (Yewande Odetoyinbo), the plant is no shrinking violet.

JUDGMENT DAY Gets World Premiere At Park Avenue Armory

This December, Park Avenue Armory will round out its 2019 season with the world premiere of a new adaptation of ?-dön von Horváth's 1937 play Judgment Day, an ambitious work that explores morality, responsibility, and the guilt of a small-town's train stationmaster and his community. The adaptation, commissioned by the Armory and penned by Obie Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright Christopher Shinn, is staged by famed British theater director Richard Jones, who returns to the Armory to helm this gripping moral parable following his critically acclaimed, eight-time Drama Deska?"nominated production of The Hairy Ape  at the Armory in 2017. With much of the narrative centered around an ill-fated train depot, Judgment Day and its vast set will take on special resonance in the 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Halla?"reminiscent of the great nineteenth century train sheds of Europe, with its vaulted ceiling and raw industrial design. The production runs December 5, 2019 through January 11, 2020. Casting will be announced in the coming weeks.

BWW Review: BARE: A Pop Opera at Gryphon Theatre

Teen angst is currently in the spotlight on Broadway, with the bullying and suicidal themes of 'Dear Evan Hansen', the catty coterie in 'Mean Girls' and the outcasts of 'Be More Chill'. The American high-school has been used as a familiar setting for any number of musicals over the past 70 years to great success and BARE: A Pop Opera is a dark, rock musical that incorporates the stereotypical characters of the high school genre and their respective struggles with self-discovery, sexuality and acceptance.
