At a time where fascist and neo-Nazi movements have made a return across the country, four transgender actors are reviving I Am My Own Wife, the Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a trans woman who survived under Nazi and Stasi rule in East Berlin by running an antiques museum. Less a revival and more a 'revisal,' the one-person show has been split up among a dynamic ensemble of four trans and nonbinary performers for a one-night-only reading on Friday, February 23rd at the Los Angeles LGBT Center's Renberg Theater. This unforgettable story of strength and defiance will be followed by a talk back with Doug Wright, the playwright, and the cast.

Shakespeare's iambic pentameter, the rhythm of his words, echo the human heartbeat: ba-BUM, ba-BUM. But Synetic Theater gets to the beating heart of ROMEO AND JULIET without a single utterance of any of the Bard's famed words. In its innovative merging of drama and movement, Synetic's silent exploration of the classic work is an extraordinary vision of wonder and passion.

Alumnae Theatre rings in the New Year on our MainStage Theatre with music and dance. Our 2015-2016 season's retrospective piece (originally produced at Alumnae Theatre in our 1989/90 season), Stepping Out by Richard Harris, directed by Brenda Darling, runs January 22-February 6, 2016. At a weekly tap dance class with a vivacious ex-pro and her vegetarian pianist, eight mismatched strangers joyfully exchange their hum-drum lives for "tap, step, ball change, cramp roll… pick up your feet". Secrets tumble out. Conflicts arise. Friendships grow. Everyone is changed. And they dance.

A comic bouquet of theatrical fluff that Shakespeare tossed off, as its title suggests, solely to please his audience, Synetic takes the story and gives it the contemporary edge that we've come to know and love. But given its gritty, urban setting and new characters, I strongly advise you re-acquaint yourself with the original plot and then peruse the 'revised' plot offered in the program here.
