BWW Review: POCATELLO - Defining a Family in Shifting Times

POCATELLO is a 2014 play from acclaimed playwright and MacArthur Fellow Samuel D. Hunter, that takes a darkly comedic look at the need for interaction and connection in an increasingly homogenized America. In a time when corporate stores are wiping out the uniqueness and the differences that separated one place from another, this play asks the possibly unanswerable question: 'How did I get here'? Samuel D. Hunter's Idaho is the locale for this unflinching look into the changing landscape of middle America, and the flawed, yet real, people trying desperately to define what makes a home when you're standing on shifting ground. His play is naturalistic in nature, reminding one of the domestic dramas of Kansan William Inge. If you aren't sure of what this kind of place looks like, (since Austin still has it's mantra to 'keep weird'), take a short drive up IH-35 to Temple and look around. I challenge you to find something that isn't a chain store.

Opening This Weekend ARSENIC AND OLD LACE t The Long Beach Playhouse

For 76 years, Kesselring's play, Arsenic and Old Lace, has enchanted audiences with its two sweet old sisters who occasionally feel the need to release a worthy roomer of his lonely suffering with a sip of their homemade Elderberry wine. Added to their misguided mayhem are a lovesick nephew and his disfigured and dangerously insane brother and the sisters' delusional charge who believes he's Teddy Roosevelt. Jeff Brown is the show's director. He's a 40 year veteran with experience in all aspects of theater. Brown has his own take on why this show continues to be an audience favorite.

Alex Bernstein Discusses Father's WEST SIDE STORY at International Thespian Festival

West Side Story, is a perennial favorite, partly because it's inspired by Romeo and Juliet. The musical,  with concept and choreography by Jerome Robbins, book by Arthur Laurents, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and music by Leonard Bernstein,  debuted on Broadway 50 years ago and was most recently revived in 2009.

MR. NEW YEAR'S EVE Comes to the Blyth Festival

At its heart, the Blyth Festival was built for one reason: to bring people together. The best in new, live, 100% Canadian theatre, right here in Canada's hometown. And it doesn't get any more Canadian than Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians.

BWW Review: Seattle Shakes Musical MIDSUMMER Hits Several Bad Notes

I've never been a fan of transplanting classic works such as Shakespeare to "new and exciting" locales and time periods but I have seen it work as long as the adaptation enhances the existing story somehow or at the very least makes sense with the story. Unfortunately, Seattle Shakespeare Company's current musical adaptation of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with a 1930's movie musical bent fails on both respects and then some. It's got a few elements in it that work but overall it makes little sense and the added music adds nothing but confusion.
