Interview: Christopher William Johnson of HELLAS at Broadwater Main Stage

The birth of western civilization and democracy takes form in the Greek epic Hellas, told in verse, mask, rhythm, dance, and stage combat. I decided to speak with writer/director Christopher William Johnson about his epic creation process and challenges of presenting the complete saga at the Broadwater Main Stage theater through May 11.

Interview: Fight Choreographer Jen Albert Absolutely Up For The BATTLESONG OF BOUDICA

Originally premiering at last year’s Hollywood Fringe, The School of Night reprises their award-winning production of Battlesong of Boudica April 9, 2023 at The Hudson Backstage. Co-founder and writer Christopher William Johnson directs the cast of Jen Albert, Daniel Adomian, Tom Block, Colin A Borden, Payton Cella, Sara Gorsky, Brad C. Light, Chloe Madriaga, Christopher Neiman, Tristan Rewald, Lacey  Rosewall, Lucy  Schmidt, Allegra  Rodriguez Shivers, Jack TenBarge, Jesse James Thomas, Frank Tirimacco and Dan Wingard. I got to throw out some questions to Jen, who’s playing the titular role of Boudica. And she punched back her answers directly on target.

Bryn Mawr Ave., Chicago. Previews will be Saturday, February 21, Friday, February 27, and Saturday, February 28 at 8PM and Sundays, February 22 and Sunday, March 1 at 3PM. The Press opening is Monday, March 2 at 8PM, and the show will run Thursdays-Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 3 from March 2-April 4. Closing (Easter) weekend performances will be Wednesday, April 1 at 8pm, Friday, April 3 at 8pm & Saturday, April 4 at 8pm.

'Moby Dick' -- Herman Melville's saga about Captain Ahab's pursuit of a great white whale -- will make its first fully-staged debut today, April 25 through May 4, and will be the subject of a free symposium at Northwestern University on April 12. The Melville classic is directed and adapted by David Catlin.

Signal Ensemble Theater to Stage PLAINSONG, Begin. 1/30

Signal Ensemble Theatre presents the second production of their 11th Season with the Chicago premiere of Plainsong, at Signal Ensemble Theatre, 1802 W. Berenice Ave. Founded in 2003, award-winning Signal Ensemble Theatre uses a deeply collaborative method to produce work never-before-seen in Chicago. Plainsong is written by Eric Schmiedl and is directed by Signal Ensemble Theatre Member Bries Vannon. The play is adapted from Kent Haruf's National Book Award finalist novel by the same name. Preview performances are on Thursday, Jan. 30 and Friday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m., followed by opening/press night on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. Performances will run Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. and ticket prices are $20 for single tickets, $15 for industry/students/seniors/groups and $10 for previews.
