The symbolic nature of Suzan-Lori Parks' 1990 free-form dramatic riff, THE DEATH OF THE LAST BLACK MAN IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD AKA THE NEGRO BOOK OF THE DEAD is made apparent to viewers as soon as they open their programs and see the characters have names like 'Black Woman With Fried Drumstick,' 'Before Columbus' and 'Lots of Grease and Lots of Pork.'
Due to popular demand, the Signature Theatre production of The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World AKA the Negro Book of the Dead, by Pulitzer Prize-winner Suzan-Lori Parks and directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz, has been extended an additional week. The subject of The 39 Steps isn't an innocent man being chased by spies across Scotland, and it isn't Alfred Hitchcock, although it serves as a fine pastiche of iconic Hitchcock moments. What seems to be on the mind of Patrick Barlow, adapting the 1938 movie more than John Buchan's classic novel, is theatre itself; the nonsensical artificiality that lies at the core of the theatrical experience. It invites us to not just recognize but embrace it in uproarious celebration.
In ZACH's production of MARY POPPINS, director Dave Steakley has assembled one of the strongest casts in Austin this year. Chock-full of perfectly-timed comedy, incredible voices, and mind-blowing choreography, POPPINS is a production the entire family will adore.
If you have never seen a production of the Impro Theatre Company, be aware that the play you see is one-time only. With the suggestion from an audience member at the top of the name of an heirloom, the actors take it, title the play, and then create the characters and the play totally from scratch. Everything that happens is spontaneous and will never be repeated in another performance. It makes me question what the job of the director, in this case member Brian Lohmann, actually is?
