The Mariinsky Announces Inaugural Programming for Opening of Mariinsky II Opera House in Russia, May 2-4

The Mariinsky Theatre, one of the largest and most acclaimed performing arts institutions in the world, under the leadership of Artistic and General Director Valery Gergiev, today announced that its new state-of-the-art opera house, Mariinsky II, will open to the public with three celebratory days of star-studded musical and dance performances from May 2 through 4, 2013. Further defining the Mariinsky as one of the world's premier centers for classical music, opera and ballet, the opening of the new hall marks the completion of the Mariinsky Cultural Complex in St. Petersburg's historic Theatre Square and provides the legendary Russian organization with even greater artistic possibilities.

The program will highlight the late choreographer Heinz Poll and his legacy through works created for the Ohio Ballet and features a new work by former Ohio Ballet dancer and ballet master, Richard Dickinson (Ohio Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Boston Ballet).

February 2, 1954 marks the 59th anniversary of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker. Wasn't the ballet presented in December? No, you are wrong. It was first unveiled by the New York City Ballet in 1954 for a few performances. It proved so popular that the company presented the ballet for an extended December run in 1954. It's been like that to this day.

Maria Tallchief, the first Native American to win acclaim as a prima ballerina, was born on January 24, 1925. While she worked with many companies and choreographers, she is most renowned for her collaboration with George Balanchine, first at the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and then, most importantly and famously, at the New York City Ballet. She was married to Balanchine from 1946 until 1952, when the marriage was annulled. Despite this interruption in their private lives they continued their professional association.

On this date in 1898 Raymonda premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The production had music by Alexander Glazunov, choreography by Marius Petipa and an all star cast (for its day) that included Pierina Legnani, Sergey Legat, Olga Peobrajenska and Pavel Gerdt.

New York City Ballet announced today that the Company will present a World Premiere by NYCB dancer and choreographer Justin Peck as part of the Company's annual New Combinations Evening on Friday, January 31, 2013. Now in its third season, TrancenDanceGroup announces the fall performances of 'Unveiled Souls' at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center tonight, November 10th and the 11th, featuring the world premiere of company director/choreographer Gabriel Chajnik's Crescent and full, and G*D, a multimedia dance work in progress about a holocaust survivor. 'Unveiled Souls ' presents two microcosms of human frailty and hope, communicated through provocative and emotionally charged choreography that is sometimes poetic, sometimes edgy. Music ranges from an original score by musician and Grammy Award-winning producer Barry Goldstein commissioned for TrancenDanceGroup to pieces by Henryk Gorecky, Ernst Bloch, and others.

Ivan Vasiliev Named Principal Dancer at ABT

Ivan Vasiliev, principal dancer with the Mikhailovksy Ballet, has been named a Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre, effective immediately, it was announced today by Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie. He is scheduled to perform during the 2013 Metropolitan Opera House season and on ABT's national and international tours.
