It’s been too long since I wrote the following sentence. Signature Theatre is back with a perfect evening (or matinee) of theatre going!! The top DMV theatre company known for producing reimagined versions of musicals and cutting-edge plays is back and stronger than ever with a new production of Jonathan Larson’s masterwork Rent.
The Music Institute of Chicago brings back a holiday tradition with “Duke It Out!,” featuring the classical (Tchaikovsky) and jazz (Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn) versions of The Nutcracker in a music and dance performance Saturday, December 11 at 2 p.m. at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston.
Directed by Signature's newly appointed Artistic Director Matthew Gardiner (Signature's A Chorus Line, Simply Sondheim), RENT stars Jake Loewenthal (Playhouse on the Park's Cabaret, Trinity Rep's A Christmas Carol) as Mark Cohen, Vincent Kempski (Signature's Assassins, A Chorus Line) as Roger Davis, and more.
Bates and Naomi Rubin join an all-star cast, including Jason Sudeikis, Jean Smart, Rosario Dawson, Mark Hamill, Martin Sheen, Lou Diamond Phillips, Ron Funches, Mandy Patinkin, Phil LaMarr, Ed Harris, George Wendt, Ben Mankiewicz and host Tom Bergeron for the live online table read.

Sudeikis will star as George Bailey with his real-life uncle, George Wendt, playing Uncle Billy. Jean Smart, Rosario Dawson, Mark Hamill, Martin Sheen, Mandy Patinkin, Lou Diamond Phillips, Phil Lamarr, Ben Mankiewicz, Ron Funches and Ed Harris will also appear in the reading. The event will be hosted by Tom Bergeron.
When Signature Theatre begins performances of Rent tomorrow, November second, it will have been 600 days exactly since it was forced to stop performing it’s theatrical greatness due to the pandemic. Today’s subject Arianna Rosario is currently living her theatre life playing Mimi Marquez in the production whixh is directed by Signature Theatre’s Artistic Director Matthew Gardiner.
