Tonight, before a gathering of theatre artists and patrons, theatreWashington announced the nominees for the 2016 Helen Hayes Awards, drawn from 202 eligible productions presented in the 2015 calendar year. Scroll down for the full list of nominees!

Producing Artistic Director Carolyn Griffin is pleased to announce that the world premiere of a new musical SHAKE LOOSE: An Evening of Moods Blues & Icons, featuring the music and lyrics of Thomas W. Jones, William Hubbard and William Knowles will be on stage at MetroStage beginning Jan. 28, 2016. Thomas W. Jones II will direct and choreograph, William Knowles will music direct and conduct and William Hubbard will co- music direct.

One of the contributions to the Women's Voices Theatre Festival is The Keegan Theatre's THE DEALER OF BALLYNAFEIGH, a new dark comedy/farce from Rosemary Jenkinson, and directed by Abigail Isaac Fine.

Sarma, an Irish-Indian playwright, gives us a glimpse of the despair of a Celtic Tiger weighed down by debt and economic depression. A country that once had so much optimism is still struggling to get back on its feet, after the financial crisis wiped out many of the gains it had made. Sarma writes with sympathy but also with remove; none of the people in her universe are completely innocent, nor completely evil either. Their humanity is contrasted with the trap that society has set for them, with almost inevitable results.

UPRISING, premiering at MetroStage, is a powerful and engaging work that asks what choices we make to ensure freedom and for what would we sacrifice it.

Producing Artistic Director Carolyn Griffin is pleased to announce that MetroStage will open the 2015-16 season with the Rolling World Premiere of UPRISING by Atlanta playwright Gabrielle Fulton as part of the Women's Voices Theater Festival, Sept 17- Oct 25. Thomas W. Jones II will direct and choreograph, and William Knowles will music direct.  

Leto is the mother goddess of Lucia. She protects the people of Lucia by confronting the many monsters summoned by Hera, Queen of the Gods. Charlie, a comic book artist for XX Comics, doesn't have to fight off monsters, but she struggles to find balance between being a mother to her daughter, Diana, meeting the demands of her boss, Meredith, and finding time to work on a new issue of her comic about the mythical Leto.

The Hub Theatre ends Season 7 with the world premier production of company member Kristen LePine's play, LETO LEGEND, directed by Artistic Director, Helen Pafumi. Charlie (Valerie Fenton) is a full time mom, writer, and superhero. How does she do it all? And more importantly, is there a way for her to stop? The mythical and modern collide in the comedy about today's superwoman. Fenton is joined by Lolita Marie, Katie Nigsch, Katie Jeffries, Audrey Bertaux and Carolyn Kashner.

DC Culture's Source Festival likely gets its name from its central place of operation, the Source Theatre on 14th St NW. But the name also pays homage to the source of the festival itself: the dozens of playwrights whose work are being produced.

Baltimore's Rabbi Menachem Youlus spun fantastical tales about his recovery of 1,000 Torahs. From the 'Auschwitz' Torah, which Rabbi Youlous 'located' using a metal detector in a prewar Auschwitz cemetery, to 'purchasing' a Torah from a former Auschwitz prison guard, Rabbi Youlous convinced many that he was the 'Jewish Indiana Jones.' People swarmed to purchase these 'unique' Torahs, unknowingly buying scrolls that actually had the same story...

Some plays are so good, or so popular with audiences, that their return to the stage is inevitable. But some plays, like high velocity music revue Bessie's Blues, take quite awhile to flow back from their ebb.

Producing Artistic Director Carolyn Griffin has announced that the award-winning musical by Thomas W. Jones II Bessie's Blues will be on stage at MetroStage beginning Jan. 22, 2015. Thomas W. Jones II will direct and choreograph, and William Knowles will music direct. A musical odyssey of African American people in the 20th century, it was ground-breaking in 1994 and is a perfect production for our stage as we celebrate our first 30 years.

In a bold undertaking as part of the company's involvement with the multi-year, multi-city National Civil War Project, Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater has commissioned Our War, a dynamic new theatrical event and collection of short stories that explores-through diverse perspectives-the historical memory and present-day reverberations of the U.S. Civil War. The series launched on October 21 and continues through November 9, 2014. BroadwayWorld has a first look at opening night below!
