BWW Review: MACBETH Highlights The Might of Women and Folly of Man Photo BWW Review: MACBETH Highlights The Might of Women and Folly of Man
by Lacey Cannon Gonzales - Nov 1, 2018

All in all, MACBETH presented by Something For Nothing Theatre is an enjoyable evening of accessible theatre. Although the play falters in act two, the show itself is mostly well done. The talent of the women in this production is the undeniable force driving the show. While by no means are their characters innocent, one wonders if Macbeth would have fared better if he had listened to them a little closer.

BWW Review: Razor Sharp Black Comedy THE SECRETARY Turns the Gun Debate On Its Head Photo BWW Review: Razor Sharp Black Comedy THE SECRETARY Turns the Gun Debate On Its Head
by Frank Benge - Mar 24, 2018

THE SECRETARY is a world premiere comedy by Kyle John Schmidt that shines a dark and wry light on America's love affair with guns. Initially developed at the Ingram New Play Lab at Nashville Repertory Theatre and workshopped earlier this season at Hyde Park Theatre, this razor sharp black comedy gets a slick, polished and professional production from Theatre en Bloc, now playing at The Long Center. When the sweet elderly secretary at a local high school deals with a threat in her office by firing off six bullets, the local gun manufacturer gets the idea to name their brand new gun 'The Secretary', after her. Sales are slumping and they take advantage of the unfortunate modern reality that news of each new shooting is good for business. As production begins on their newest firearm, their guns begin going off without anyone pulling the trigger. Featuring an all female cast, THE SECRETARY is a black comedy with an extremely timely message.

BWW Review: THE MEMBER OF THE WEDDING Gets Thoughtful Loving Production Photo BWW Review: THE MEMBER OF THE WEDDING Gets Thoughtful Loving Production
by Frank Benge - Nov 27, 2017

THE MEMBER OF THE WEDDING was a 1946 novel by Southern writer Carson McCullers. It took her five years to complete, although she did interrupt the writing for a few months to write the short novel The Ballad of the Sad Caf . The novel has been adapted for the stage, motion pictures, and television. McCullers herself adapted the novel for the Broadway stage in 1950. The film version followed in 1952 and a stage musical version, F. Jasmine Addams, was produced Off-Broadway in 1971. The work examines why people exclude others and the resulting consequences. The central figures also talk about how they wish the world was more fluid and changeable in terms of race, gender and identity, all of which runs thematically through McCullers body of work.

Shakespeare's RICHARD III, is one of his best in terms of sheer drama, but Last Act Theatre takes it a step further by filling the traditionally male dominated world with an all female cast; the result is dazzling and inspiring.
