Village Theatre's 16th Annual Village Originals Festival of New Musicals

Well it may have been hotter than blazes this past weekend but I managed to spend the weekend inside at one of my favorite events of the year, The Village Theatre Village Originals Festival of New Musicals. They presented concert stagings of five musicals still in the works. It's a great opportunity for the authors to get to see their shows in front of an audience and for us to get a sneak peak at amazing musical theater to come. Now as they are still being workshopped I can't really review any of them but I can tell you what I saw.

BWW Review: MIDSUMMER (A PLAY WITH SONGS) at TheaterWorks
by Joseph Harrison
- Aug 15, 2016
When David Greig and Gordon McIntyre's MIDSUMMER (A PLAY WITH SONGS) begins, and Helena (Rebecca Hart) and Bob (M. Scott McLean) enter the stage each with a guitar in their hands, the audience gets an immediate sense for what they are in for - a quirky, funny, frantic, beautiful, and somewhat unlikely love story told through scene and song.
BWW Review: LUNA GALE
by Keith Waits
- Oct 12, 2015
As techno music plays and the stage lights come up in the Pamela Brown Theatre the audience is presented with an antiseptic, industrial brick wall with large windows and a set of chairs. It is here that Peter (David McElwee) is crashed out, slumping over the chairs while Karlie (Lexi Lapp) is jumping all over the room occasionally rummaging through a bag of junk food or talking on the phone. This is a hospital ER and this young couple is there because their daughter, Luna Gale, is sick. Unfortunately, Peter and Karlie are too.

In response to popular demand, Soho Rep., in association with John Adrian Selzer, extends the world premiere of 10 out of 12 by Anne Washburn (Mr. Burns) to July 11. The production, which opens on June 10, reunites the playwright with the Obie Award-winning director Les Waters, Artistic Director at Actors Theatre of Louisville. In 10 out of 12, a company of theatre artists is engaged in the very peculiar-and uniquely impossible-task of making a new play. Based on notes Washburn took during her past technical rehearsals, this Soho Rep. commission is a wry and absorbing look at how work forms us and deforms us.
