SHALOM-ENTASCHEN 2020: A Purim Carnival For Everyone Comes To The People's Building

At long last, Purim is finally getting its due. Jews the world over agree Purim is the a?oefuna?? holiday amidst a long line of more solemn occasions. The holiday celebrates the story of Esther, the Queen of Persia, who saved the Jews from execution by evil Haman, advisor to the king. It all took place around 357 B.C.E., but today's Jews celebrate it with great fanfare in their communities and synagogues. Costumes, parades, music & carnivals are the norm. But aside from Israel and insular communities around synagogues, it never gets the press it's due.  That changes now.

BWW Review: Chaffin's Barn's Earnest and Uneven New Musical ESTHER Premieres

Nothing fills a critic's heart and soul with as much glee as the premiere of a brand-spanking-new musical, heretofore unseen by mortal men (and women). Thus, I'm happy to report that Esther, a new musical that premiered Thursday at Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre in an abbreviated four performance run, has some exceptional elements to be found in its two hours of performance time, although clearly there's a lot of work to be done if the show is to have a future outside The Barn.

BWW Review: Dezart's MOTHERHOOD OUT LOUD is a Sweet, Funny, Well-Acted Winner.

The final production of Dezart Performs' 10th anniversary season, MOTHERHOOD OUT LOUD, is an anthology of sketches and monologues by different writers about the trials and tribulations of motherhood, with a few fatherhood ideas mixed in. The writing is funny and touching, and Susan R. Rose and Joan Stein, who conceived the show, which ran off Broadway, wisely avoided anything truly upsetting. Michael Shaw's expert direction and the charismatic ensemble cast's top-notch performances contribute to a laugh-out-loud, feel good couple of hours, that will have audience members nodding in recognition; director Shaw and all of the cast members successfully deliver the pacing and timing that are key ingredients in a production like this.
