The Anchoress, a new monodrama by composer David Ludwig, "a composer with something urgent to say" (Philadelphia Inquirer), will have its world premiere on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 7:30 PM at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia under the auspices of the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. The next evening, Thursday, October 18, the New York premiere will take place at DiMenna Center for Classical Music. Set to texts by Katie Ford, whose poetry "possess[es] the veiled brilliance of stained glass windows seen at night" (The New York Times Book Review), The Anchoress is based on the medieval mystic tradition called anchorism and its relationship to contemporary society. RIDE Foundation (Robyn & Italo Dance Events), formed by Pro-Am ballroom dance partners, Robyn Shreiber and Italo Elgueta, has announced that its 2nd annual gala event, DANCE FOR FREEDOM, will benefit two of Los Angeles' leading organizations who are dedicated to fighting human trafficking - CAST (Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking), and Journey Out. Emily Kramer Golinkoff is a 33 year old powerhouse with big eyes and a fatal disease. In 2011 Emily's condition was deteriorating; she was running out of treatment options, and it was terrifying. Instead of giving up, she decided to do something about it. Along with her mother, Liza Kramer, Emily co-founded Emily's Entourage, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit dedicated to accelerating research and drug development for Cystic Fibrosis. The urgency of Emily's condition is spurring revolutionary research and drug development that could help the roughly 30 million people worldwide who suffer from a genetic disease caused by a nonsense mutation, including forms of muscular dystrophy and cancer, as well as Emily's rare form of Cystic Fibrosis.

The University Musical Society (UMS) and the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre & Dance EXCEL Lab are proud to announce the 2018 cohort of 21st Century Artist Interns. These four students, all SMTD undergraduates, will spend the summer working with a professional dance, theater, or music ensemble that UMS will present during the 2018-19 season. When they return to campus, the interns continue their work via a one-credit independent study. To fulfill course requirements, each student will serve as a campus ambassador, educator, and marketer to support the ensemble during its visit. Each intern earns a competitive stipend of $5,000 to cover the cost of lodging, travel, and living expenses during the internship. The $5,000 stipend is on par with similar internship programs in the sciences, and a rarity in the arts, where internships are often unpaid, volunteer opportunities.
