Review: LIZZIE, Southwark Playhouse

From the moment the lights go up, Lizzie is a full throttle onslaught of female rage. There's heavy guitars, some serious belting, strobing lights, and plenty of fake blood. Unfortunately, though, the storytelling feels disjointed - it’s not always easy to figure out what exactly is going on, as more and more plot points are loosely alluded to or presented as already known.

Review: MALEVO, Peacock Theatre

Bang-bang-bang. Tap-tap-tap. Stomp-stomp-stomp. Crackity-crack-crack. Matías Jaime’s Argentinian hit Malevo sounds like the world’s loudest hailstorm while serving up a feast of blistering choreography.

Review: THE MAGIC PARLOUR Presented by Goodman Theatre

If you like good old-fashioned magic, sleight of hand, and mind-reading tricks, Dennis Watkins’s THE MAGIC PARLOUR is the ticket. Watkins has been performing his one-man show since 2011, and it’s newly arrived in the former Petterino’s reception space, which has been transformed into the titular magic parlor. Watkins is a master at his craft — the magic tricks themselves, of course, but also at entertaining audiences. He’s a real performer; evidently he’s had plenty of time to hone his act, but he also understands how to charm in a way that’s warm and inviting (even if the bits are well rehearsed). I think that’s in many ways the great feat of THE MAGIC PARLOUR; what’s a magician without charm up his sleeve?

Review: COWBOIS, Swan Theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon

Cowbois might sound like a reboot of Sister Act but there is far more going under the satin bonnets. Gunslinger Jack Cannon (Vinnie Heaven) arrives in a small Wild West-era outpost, handsome by appearance, fearsome by reputation and with a bounty of 200 dollars on their head. The town is populated only by women and a drunken sheriff (Paul Hunter), their menfolk having been gone for over a year and presumed dead after a mine blast.

Review: ROCKY HORROR SHOW at Kavinoky Theatre

The spooky transvestites have once again taken to the stage for the Halloween season. Happily, The Kavinoky Theatre’s stage production of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW ticks off almost all of the boxes for a fun night of laughs.

Student Blog: #musicaltheatre

Social media has been entirely integrated into the theatre industry. It’s hard to find a Broadway show that isn’t active on Instagram or TikTok. Performers have taken to social media as well to advertise and create a name for themselves. As a high school performer, I have noticed both the positive and negative effects of social media’s involvement in the theatre industry.
