BWW Blog: The Theatre World is “Non-Stop” - Ways to Keep Engaged with Shows

Since the day that the theaters in New York closed, I've felt a little emptiness in my heart. Not seeing the actors I follow on social media getting ready for shows that day, was a strange experience as I'd grown so used to it over these past few years. Looking at photos of the Theater District in Manhattan felt like looking at a ghost town, with only a few people wandering around outside and no sign of the usual buzzing energy.

Openings of the Closed: IN THE BELLY OF THE MOTHER at Plenty Collective

Audience members with beers in hand sit down at brewery benches looking toward a set of 8ft tall poles suspending wine-red sheets. A white curtain nestles between them, with black painted text reading In The Belly Of The Mother. A brass band plays a set, against large metal brewing tubs, dressed in monochrome red. We bang out the last bars of a?oeOld Town Road,a?? the crowd cheers, and I grab my rat mask. Sliding it over my face, I can see crescent moons of the crowd past my pointy nose. Through new eyes I see our leading player, Brigid, crumpled over their limbs on the floor.

BWW Spotlight Series: Meet Tanya Alexander – Spoken Word Artist and Lead Actor in HUMAN INTEREST STORY at the Fountain Theatre

With the current theatre world on hiatus, I have created a Spotlight Series on Broadway World Los Angeles which features interviews with some of the many talented artists who make our Los Angeles theatre community so exciting and vibrant thanks to their ongoing contribution to keeping the arts alive in the City of the Angels. And like all of us, how are they dealing with the abrupt end of productions in which they were involved? This Spotlight focuses on Tanya Alexander, a spoken word artist and writer of poetry and music, who I recently reviewed in her leading role in HUMAN INTEREST STORY at the Fountain Theatre in Hollywood, in which she plays Jane Doe, an anonymous homeless woman plucked from a park bench and made a media celebrity.
