BWW Review: Shit-Faced Shakespeare's THE TAMING OF THE SHREW Butchers the Bard
by Amanda England
- Dec 3, 2019
Shit-faced Shakespeare's THE TAMING OF THE SHREW has come to Austin's Spider House Ballroom! The premise is simple: one cast member has several drinks before the show and, as a result, behaves poorly onstage. The other actors then have to cope with being heckled by a member of their own troupe. 'The Drunk' can then be made to drink even more during the performance by audience members or the show's master of ceremonies. So it's Shakespeare - but sloppier.

INTO THE WOODS An Immersive Singalong Experience will Play at Brooklyn Theatre Club
by Chloe Rabinowitz
- Nov 13, 2019
Fractured fairytales hit the stage with an epic story about wishes, family and the choices we make. 'Be careful what you wish for' is the ongoing theme in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods. The story follows The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to go the King's Festival, Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk, and a familiar cast of many others! What begins a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
OVER HERE! - Back with the Beat at The Triad
by Richard Ridge
- Nov 13, 2019
On Monday night, Over Here! The Big Band Musical was back in New York at The Triad Theatre for the first time since its original 1974 Broadway production and the joint was jumpin'. Veteran's Day proved to be the perfect time to revive this beloved celebration of the American spirit and optimism that defined the 1940's. To make it even more worthwhile, a portion of the proceeds from the evening was donated to Vietnam Veterans of America. Over Here! is one of this journalist's favorite musicals, so I was thrilled to have it back on the boards. Under the razor-sharp direction of Will Nunziata, who is quickly becoming a go-to director, this feel-good show sparkled and shined like a freshly polished diamond. It featured a stellar cast of 19, plus an 11-piece swing band, under musical director extraordinaire Blake Allen. Choreographer Andrew Black used every inch of space to give us one eye-popping musical number after another.

This brings WAM's donation total since its founding in 2010 to $75,000.
BWW Review: SEA at Scena Theatre
by Evann Normandin
- Nov 9, 2019
I have to hand it to Scena Theatre- they consistently elevate interesting, international work. Director Robert McNamara brings Jon Fosse's SEA to DC for its US debut performance at the intimate DC Arts Center, and the performance will surely leave you thinking. Norwegian playwright Fosse, one of Europe's most performed dramatists, has been translated into over 40 languages and, in 2010, won the biggest prize in global theatre- the Ibsen award. There were moments on opening night when all the stars aligned: persuasive acting, poignant dialogue, precise movements, and inspired casting. There were also moments when pacing, language, and the play's inherent incomprehensibility made engaging with Fosse's work difficult.
