BWW Review: CONTACT HIGH from Theater 511 Soars at Ars Nova
by Derek McCracken
- Aug 20, 2019
The whole of Contact High from Theater 511 is greater than the sum of its parts, which is a good thing in light of this show's plethora of moving parts within its kaleidoscopic plot. The result is a timely coming-of-age pop-rock musical that tells a lyrical and satirical story of drug addiction, the need for human connection, and hope.

BWW Review: MAMMA MIA! at Alhambra Theatre And Dining
by Jordan Higginbotham
- Aug 14, 2019
a?oeHoney, Honeya?? Mama Mia! Has begun performances at the Alhambra Theatre and Dining. The show composed of all ABBA music, follows Sophie Sheridan as she searches for her biological father. After stumbling upon her mother's diary, she discovers there are three possible men. Sophie comes up with the idea to invite all three to her wedding and there she will discover which one is her father. I, personally, was entranced by the music and could not believe how a story can revolve around the music rather than the music revolve around the story. The audience was thrilled to hear these classic songs come to life on stage!
BWW Review: THE ROARING BANSHEES at Smock Alley Theatre
by Jini Rooney
- Aug 14, 2019
Writers Peter McGann & John Morton have let loose The Roaring Banshees, part two of their Ripping Yarn Trilogy. The trilogy celebrates the centenary years of Ireland's independence. Part one: The Hellfire Squad successfully premiered in 2016 and told the tale of Micheal Collins' assassins. They are currently working on their final installment, The Folklore Commission.
The Roaring Banshees are a fictionalised branch of Cumann na mBan, an Irish republican women's paramilitary organisation active during the Irish War of Independence and Civil War. Outlawed by the Irish Free State and sorely betrayed by both the Irish and English factions, the clan of 7 cross the pond and set up shop in Chicago.
BWW Review: WHY WE TELL THE STORY: A Celebration of African-American Musical Theatre at the Stratford Festival
by Lauren Gienow
- Aug 13, 2019
As I took my seat in the lobby of Stratford's Festival Theatre on Monday night, the eager patron next to me leaned in and proclaimed a?oeThere is quite the buzz in here!a?? She was absolutely right. We had both arrived early enough to grab seats for WHY WE TELL THE STORY: A CELEBRATION OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATRE--A much anticipated cabaret event conceived by Festival actor Marcus Nance who can currently be seen in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and BILLY ELLIOT. After initially selling out months before the Festival season even began, the high demand of this show led to more chairs being added and eventually to 'standing room only' tickets being sold so that as many people as possible could witness what indeed turned out to be a magical night of words and song.

by Tanya Seale
- Aug 7, 2019
Mary Engelbreit, that is. Roald Dahl's Matilda, playing now through August 11 at The Muny in Forest Park, is inspireda?'the entire productiona?'by the artwork of St. Louis' own Mary Engelbreit, and is it ever something to see! Even on first glance of the curtain, which is painted with colorful stacks of books, polka dots, and hearts on a vine, one can tell this show is going to be a special kind of Muny magic. And sure enough, that inspiration...
