BWW Review: WONDERLAND WIVES Breaks The Crystal Slipper With Raunchy Laughter at THEATRE DOWNTOWN

Walt Disney would turn over in his grave if he saw 'Wonderland Wives' at Theatre Downtown. That's the point. It is supposed to break apart the crystal slipper. This is a in your face comedy poking fun at the idea of perfect princesses in the family friendly genre. This is a fairy tale full of raunchy characters with very real issues. 'Wonderland Wives' is a comical and bawdy tale of what happens after the final words in the storybook saying 'And they lived happily ever after'. It's saturated with puns, one-liners, and language that would make any magic carpet blush. These Disney princesses act more like very-desperate housewives instead of storybook icons. Buddy Thomas's writing cleverly balances an uncomfortable comedy found in these iconic storybook characters dropping shock value vocabulary. It's definitely not for children. It's bawdy, trashy and campy fun. The characters display language and behavior that you may not indulge in regularly. But dang it if you cant click away from laughing so much.

BWW Review: The Heat of CHICAGO Cools at Virginia Samford Theatre

This production of CHICAGO is enjoyable. I was expecting more of an energetic 'umph' from the leads. Without that, I felt the show's energy lacked cohesion from the beginning. It's opening weekend. If they can find that spark, this show will be one hot CHICAGO.

BWW Interview: Insights with Director David McMahon on his 1960's version of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW at Virginia Samford Theatre

If ever there was a time to challenge the ugly face of male chauvinism, it is now. Lets be honest, dating is rough these days. Courting in 2017 is far more complicated when compared to those in the 1500's. In today world, a line of cleverly arranged emoji's has replaced a heartfelt, handwritten sonnet composed on rose scented parchment paper. The thrilling anticipation once found from seeing a suitors initials imprinted over a wax seal is now applied to receiving a text message of 'WYD?' Complexities found in matching personalities are still a difficult factor in any relationship. William Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew' is one of the notable vintage comedy tropes about the fella trying to get the girl. But like wine, some comedy flavor becomes bitter with time. The core of 'The Taming of the Shrew' holds a tone of accepted abuse and manipulation of women. The comedy structure of an arrogant wealthy man psychologically berating a woman into submission was in the past seen as a blueprint of male behavior. Thankfully, now it is viewed as a reminder of chauvinistic dynamics in society that must be challenged.

BWW Review: A LIFE IN THE THEATRE Provokes Thought and Laughter

A LIFE IN THE THEATRE at Terrific New Theatre is a very interesting look at life backstage. Written by David Mamet and first produced in 1977, this play holds up well and is definitely true to form for Mamet in that it leaves much open to your interpretation, something intelligent theatre goers will enjoy. Expertly directed and acted by some of BIrmingham's finest actors, it is a real treat.

BWW Review: BIG FISH Is Storytelling At Its Best

Theatre is about telling stories. BIG FISH at Red Mountain Theatre Company Cabaret is full of stories, both large and small. It tells the stories of the Bloom family, both the exaggerated ones of Edward, the father and the real ones of Will, the son. Or are they all real- you be the judge. Family, faith in yourself and life, and pure entertainment make up a very memorable evening when you see BIG FISH.  The show runs through October 4 and is worth making the time to see.
