Music Director Alan Gilbert opens the New York Philharmonic's 2013-14 season with the Opening Gala concert, headlined by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, tonight, September 25, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Gilbert will conduct Mr. Ma and the Orchestra in two works by Argentinian composers: the World Premiere of Octavio Brunetti's arrangement, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, of a suite from Astor Piazzolla's La serie del Ángel, and Osvaldo Golijov's Azul, composed for the eminent cellist. The program opens with Ravel's Alborada del gracioso and closes with Bolero, two pieces that reflect the French composer's fascination with Spain. The concert will be telecast nationally on Live From Lincoln Center at a later date, and Classical 105.9 FM WQXR at 7:30 p.m.
Amas Musical Theatre (Donna Trinkoff/Artistic Producer) will present three free staged readings of 'Cookin'!', a new musical by Debra Barsha and Hollye Levin, with musical director Gillian Berkowitz, directed by Lynne Taylor-Corbett. Dr. Barbara Ann Teers's National Black Theatre (NBT) will open its 45th Season with the New York Premiere of The Last Saint On Sugar Hill, written by Keith Josef Adkins and directed by Seret Scottannounced NBT's Director of Theatre Arts Program, Jonathan McCrory. Preview performances begin Tuesday, October 29th at NBT, 2031 Fifth Avenue starting at 7:30pm. The opening night is set for Friday, November 1st at 7pm. The production will run through Sunday, November 24th.
The Brooklyn Book Festival and AT&T today announced the 'Fan Fave' competition to reward top authors with donations to their preferred literary or literacy programs. Voting began on Monday, September 16th with the start of the more than 60 'Bookends', literary-themed events taking place throughout the borough, and it will conclude on the main day of the Festival on Sunday, September 22nd, which takes place from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM. Attendees can vote now on their favorite author by using the official AT&T Brooklyn Book Festival app, available for download on both the iPhone and Android; voting will also take place on the 22nd at the AT&T Lounge in Borough Hall Plaza. The top three will receive a cash prize to be donated to the nonprofit of their choice.
