Playwright Larry Kramer Wins 2013 PEN Literary Award

Tickets to New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players' PIRATES OF PENZANCE & PATIENCE at Symphony Space on Sale 8/20

The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players, America's preeminent professional Gilbert & Sullivan repertory company, launches its G&S Fest 2013-14, presenting iconic classic productions of The Pirates of Penzance and Patience when the company returns to Symphony Space (2537 Broadway at 95th Street) on December 27th for a strictly limited engagement through January 5th! Marc Black and Warren Bernhardt Set for Jazz Festival at the Maverick, 8/31

Maverick Concerts, the oldest continuous summer chamber music festival in America, announces the next concert in its 'Jazz Festival at the Maverick' series. Singer-songwriter Marc Black will be joined by pianist, composer and producer Warren Bernhardt. The program celebrates the release of their recently recorded duet CD, Champions of Love. The concert is on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 8:30 p.m.

Film Society of Lincoln Center Announces 2013 NewFest

The 25th annual NewFest, New York's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Film Festival will run from Friday, September 6th through Wednesday, September 11th, with a lineup of 15 narrative features, 4 documentaries, 31 shorts and other special events.

Essence Goldman to Perform at Jewish Museum, 9/15

Essence Goldman is performing a rock concert for families on Sunday, September 15 at 2:00 pm at The Jewish Museum. With a voice likened to Nelly Furtado and Gwen Stefani, Essence Goldman's infectious original songs and unique style appeal to parents and kids alike. Families will rock to original songs such as T Rexxxxx! and familiar favorites like You Are My Sunshine from her new album, A Dog Named Moo.

Road Less Traveled Productions to Open 10th Season with BUFFALO RISES, Begin. 9/13

Buffalo-based theatre company Road Less Traveled Productions (RLTP) kicks off its monumental tenth season September 13, 2013 with the world premiere of Buffalo Rises. Comprised of eight, ten-minute snapshots, Buffalo Rises honors what it is to be a Buffalonian through the exploration of our rising past, beautiful present, and hopeful future.

Moving Image to Screen FUN CITY: NEW YORK IN THE MOVIES 1967-75, Begin. Today

Movies filmed in New York City that tapped into the turmoil, chaos, and social and cultural energies of the late 1960s and early 1970s are the subject of the screening series Fun City: New York in the Movies 1967-75, curated by film critic and historian J. Hoberman. The series, which will be accompanied by a new monograph written by Hoberman, includes nineteen films, and will be presented by Museum of the Moving Image from August 10 through September 1. The films include established classics such as Rosemary's Baby, The French Connection, Midnight Cowboy, and Dog Day Afternoon, as well as lesser known films such as The Angel Levine, Bye Bye Braverman, and Cotton Comes to Harlem.

Dominique Morisseau's SUNSET BABY, Salons with Daphne Rubin-Vega, David Bar Katz & More Set for Labyrinth Theater Company's Fall 2013 Season

Labyrinth Theater Company (Artistic Director Mimi O'Donnell, Managing Director Danny Feldman), the award-winning, downtown ensemble, today announced its Fall 2013 season, including 100, a selection of monologues written and performed by Eric Bogosian, and Sunset Baby, new play by Dominique Morisseau. The season will kick off with a new series of Artist Salons featuring Craig 'muMs' Grant, Daphne Rubin-Vega and David Bar Katz. All work will be presented at the Bank Street Theater (155 Bank Street), Labyrinth Theater Company's home in New York City's West Village.

Lincoln Center Film Society Presents 20th Century Fox Films, Beg. Tonight

The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced Fasten Your Seatbelts (Part 2): 20th Century Fox (today, August 9-15), a summertime big screen showcase of some of the movie studio's most beloved and unforgettable films. Presented via DCP restorations and beautiful studio library 35mm prints, with a focus on a single artist and their creative contribution to each film, Fasten Your Seatbelts is sure to be a truly rare movie-going event. In the summer of 2010, FSLC presented the first Fasten Your Seatbelts series to coincide with and celebrate 20th Century Fox's 75th Anniversary. The popularity of that series, including screenings of classics like ALL ABOUT EVE, M*A*S*H and ALIEN all but demanded that Film Society and the studio present a 'sequel' at some point.

Penguin Rep Theatre Presents DROP DEAD PERFECT, Starring Everett Quinton, Tonight

Penguin Rep Theatre presents the world premiere of Drop Dead Perfect, a new comedy by Erasmus Fenn, directed by Penguin Rep founder and Artistic Director Joe Brancato, and starring Drama Desk Award winner and legendary Ridiculous Theatrical Company veteran Everett Quinton, beginning tonight, August 9 in Stony Point (Rockland County), New York.

New York City Opera and BAM Present U.S. Premiere of ANNA NICOLE Opera, 9/17

New York City Opera's 2013-14 season and BAM's 2013 Next Wave Festival begin with the U.S. premiere of Anna Nicole, an opera by composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and librettist Richard Thomas based on the flamboyant life and tragic death of Anna Nicole Smith. This highly anticipated co-production includes seven performances at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, on September 17, 19, 21, 24, 25, 27, and 28 at 7:30pm. RING OF FIRE, THE MUSIC OF JOHNNY CASH Opens at Chenango River Theatre Tonight

From tonight, Aug. 8 - Sept. 1, Chenango River Theatre will be one of the first theatres in the country to present the new version of Ring of Fire, The Music of Johnny Cash (co-produced by The Raymond Corporation). Just updated this spring at Milwaukee Rep Theatre - a company well known for creating highly successful 'jukebox musicals' - the show is a living portrait of the Man in Black and features the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash in a unique musical about love and faith, struggle and success, rowdiness and redemption, and home and family.

Pen Parentis Opens 10th Season of Literary Salon - Free to Public, 9/10

David Zippel to Direct NAMT's SHOW OFF! Benefit Concert, 10/20

The National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) will present SHOW OFF!, a benefit concert celebrating 25 years of NAMT's Annual Festival of New Musicals on Sunday, October 20 at 7pm at New York University's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts (566 LaGuardia Place at Washington Square).

Young Jean Lee Set Releases Her First Album Today

Young Jean Lee, whom The New York Times recently called 'hands down, the most adventurous downtown playwright of her generation,' will release her band Future Wife's first album, entitled We're Gonna Die and produced by Shannon Fields (Stars Like Fleas, Leverage Models), today, August 6.

NYC Ballet Opens with SWAN LAKE, 9/17; Full Season Announced!

New York City Ballet will open its 2013-2014 season on Tuesday, September 17 with six performances of Peter Martins' full-length production of Swan Lake. Set to Tschaikovsky's score and featuring sets and costumes by the acclaimed Danish painter Per Kirkeby, the production was last performed by NYCB in the fall of 2011 to sold-out houses.
