Erin Markey, Max Steele, Anna Sperber and More Set for BAX's 2013 OPEN STUDIO SERIES, 11/3-17

BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange has announced its 2013 OPEN STUDIO SERIES.

Featuring BAX's Artists-In-Residence, the Open Studio Series begins a shared journey through the creative process. The audience engages with the artists as they open the doors to their rehearsal practice. This journey continues with the Works-in Progress Series in January, and culminates in the Spring performances. This is a rare opportunity to follow a work and engage its creators from the Early Stages through to full productions.

We developed this series to further BAX's core mission of supporting arts and artists in progress. To us, the journey from the initial idea to the premiere of a work is as important as the work itself. We are inviting the public to see the work of our Artists-in-Residence as it is being created and developed.

Opening the doors to the various stages of a work's development and sharing the journey deepens the relationships between the work, the artist and the audience. Open Studio Showings include a moderated question-and-answer period where the audience's observations and the artist's intentions are explored.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE:

ANNA SPERBER's work has been presented in venues including The Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop, Baryshnikov Arts Center, The Chocolate Factory, Danspace Project, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, and The Ronald Feldman Gallery among many others. As a performer, she has worked with many choreographers including luciana achugar, and Juliette Mapp. Sperber was as a 2013 Artist-In-Residence in the Dance in Process Series at Gibney Dance Center, a 2006-08 Movement Research Artist-In-Residence, and a 2008/09 resident choreographer of Sugar Salon through WAX and Barnard College. Her work has also been supported through residencies including LMCC at Governors Island, Harkness Dance Center, Mount Tremper Arts, and Experimental Television Center.
Sperber co-founded classclassclass.org, and was a co-curator of the Mr Festival Spring 08. She has taught at Dance New Amsterdam, American Dance Festival, Hunter College, classclassclass, and as a guest artist at George Washington University. Sperber holds a BFA from SUNY Purchase.

Erin Markey creates comedic performances and original music for stage and video. Major works include Puppy Love: A Stripper's Tail (P.S. 122), The Dardy Family Home Movies by Stephen Sondheim by Erin Markey (San Francisco Film Society), Looking for Limbo (Lincoln Center Director's Lab) and currently, the recurring Erin Markey at Joe's Pub with Kenny Mellman (Public Theater). She was a featured artist in the critically acclaimed Our Hit Parade(Joe's Pub). She has shown other work at New Museum, Brooklyn Academy Of Music (BAM), Under The Radar, 54 Below, Ars Nova and received NYFA's 2012 Cutting Edge Artist Fund Grant. As an actress, Markey is a company member of Obie Award winning Half Straddle, has performed with Young Jean Lee's Theater Company, and starred in Tennessee Williams' Green Eyes, receiving Boston's Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Performance. She was a series regular on TV's Jeffery and Cole Casserole (LOGO Network).

KATY PYLE is a multimedia performance artist whose works explore transformation, queer failure, and the lineage of performance. Pyle began studying ballet as a child, becoming an apprentice with Austin Contemporary Ballet at 14, and furthered her studies at North Carolina School of the Arts. She went on to study modern dance at NCSA, and then post-modern dance and Multimedia Performance Art at Hollins. Pyle moved to New York in 2002, and her performance works have been presented at Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, PS122, La Mama, Dance Theater Workshop, Movement Research at the Judson Church, and the Bushwick Starr. She has been in collaborative processes with Ivy Baldwin, Faye Driscoll, John Jasperse, Karinne Keithley Syers, Jennifer Monson, Anna Sperber, Katie Workum, and Young Jean Lee Theater Company. She's received creative support from Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX), Dragon's Egg, Rockbridge Artist's Exchange, and Mount Tremper Arts.

The creative marriage of Nia Love and Marjani Fortè, LOVE|FORTÈ A COLLECTIVE is a research/process, performance, and teaching geared collective, with a commitment to social and politically conscious art making that connects the human experience through generations. They have developed work and a teaching methodology that reflects our identity as artists of successive generations, reflecting an Africanist approach to learning and evolution. They're interested in re-defining the Performance Experience, through a commitment to the PROCESS of art making via choreographic and Improvisational-based Performance, and an equal valuing of Research and Embodied Memory as profound sources in the creative process. LOVE|FORTÈ embraces a spectrum of performance venues and spaces i.e. theatre, installation/gallery, and site-specific spaces. Current and recent activities include site-specific investigation as a part of their pluralistic training for young artists in dance (Dance Without Walls), WOW Café, DanceNOW at Joe's Pub performance, Judson Church, and No Longer Empty Exhibit/Site-Specific.

MAX STEELE is a performer and writer living in Brooklyn. He has presented work at Dixon Place, the New Museum, Deitch Projects, BAM, Joe's Pub, Envoy Enterprises, PPOW Gallery, UPenn's Kelly Writers' House, and the Queens Museum of Art. He writes the psychedelic porno poetry zineScorcher, and his writing has been featured in Dossier Journal, Spank, East Village Boys,Birdsong, and Noisey. He was a member of Richert Schnorr's Dance/video band GRAPHIC.GLORY and performs in the queercore goth rap duo B0DYH1GH. As an actor, Steele has performed in the NYC debut of Tennessee Williams' Now the Cats with the Jeweled Claws (at La MAMA), Dan Fishback's You Will Experience Silence, the LOGO TV sitcom Jeffery and Cole Casserole, and work as a go-go dancer for New York's only queer punk party QxBxRx earned him the moniker "go-go boy of the damned".

Melanie Jones is a Canadian-born writer, performer and producer. THE CALL is her third solo theatre work. Her second work, ENDURE: A RUN WOMAN SHOW was presented in London during the 2012 Olympic Games and as part of the 2013 Scotiabank Calgary Marathon. Jones was awarded 2012 NYIT (New York Innovative Theater) Awards for Solo Performance and Original Full-length Script and was shortlisted for the Brick Award at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Her theatrical work has been presented in four countries and her work as a writer has taken her to Paris, Zambia, India and Haiti. Author of three published nonfiction books, Jones also created more than 50 episodes for CityTV, 55 videos for the LEAP PROJECT, an online course for distressed youth, and more than 25 stories for WAVES OF CHANGE, documenting the world water crisis. She was a 2013 TEDxCalgary speaker.
