Today’s subject William T. Newman Jr. is currently living his theatre life portraying the esteemed African-American playwright August Wilson in How I Learned What I Learned at WSC Avant Bard. The production marks the company’s return to LIVE performances and runs through December 19th at Gunston Arts Center in Theatre Two.

August Wilson’s story of seven friends in post-war Pittsburgh may take a while to get started, but don’t let the slow pace or lengthy run time fool you. The play, and Arena’s production, have all the ingredients of great drama - rich characters, powerful writing, and human introspection - and together they simmer and tell a timeless story about race and economic inequality in America.

'King Hedley II,' in Timothy Douglas' riveting and thrilling production now at Arena Stage, portrays life in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the early 1980's. The six-character play is a symphony of rage, despair, hope, regret, love and determination. Douglas has staged Wilson's play in the round with a spare, concrete-inflected set. The production has a deliberate, ritualistic tone, with the actors assembling in silence and remaining visible throughout the performance.

This is a must-see of the DC theatre season!
