June marks the official start of Pride Month! This year, BroadwayWorld is celebrating pride with a series focused on some of our favorite LGBTQ-themed musicals, plays, characters, and songs!

Join in for The 39th Annual Mermaid Parade on Sunday, September 12, 2021! The parade kicks off at 1pm (rain or shine) on West 21st and Surf Avenue and proceeds on Surf Avenue to West 10th, then heads south to the Boardwalk and then west back to its ending point at Steeplechase Plaza on the Boardwalk.

The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts announced today that Jason Robert Brown, Savion Glover, Priscilla López, Susan Stroman, Marisha Wallace, and Christopher Wheeldon have joined the growing list of Broadway stars participating in I'm Still Here: A Virtual Benefit for the Billy Rose Theatre Division, airing June 23, 2021 on Broadway On Demand at 8pm EST and 8pm PST. The fundraiser will help raise critical funds for the Library for the Performing Arts' beloved Theatre Division as it celebrates its 90th anniversary this year.

The “Spotlight on Plays” series will conclude on Thursday, June 17 with Sarah Ruhl’s Dear Elizabeth starring Academy Award winners Kevin Kline and Meryl Streep with stage directions voiced by Polly Noonan.  Dear Elizabeth will premiere on Thursday, June 17 at 8PM EST/5PM PST and will be available for a limited time only.

Moongate Productions will present the world premiere of who we are, a one act play written and directed by Christine Toy Johnson at the Women's Theatre Festival WTFringe2021 on July 9 at 6 pm EST with subsequent performances on July 17 at 6 pm EST and 24 at 6:30 pm EST.

Queens Theatre will host a second series of AAPI Healing Circle virtual spaces, starting in June and through this summer. The AAPI Healing Circle sessions, open to all individuals who identify as part of the AAPI community, will be held every other Monday at 7pm ET from June 14 to August 23.

I'm Still Here, a new virtual benefit for The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts' Billy Rose Theatre Division, will stream on Broadway On Demand on June 23. The evening is a celebration of the division's 90th Anniversary, and the 50th  Anniversary of its beloved Theatre on Film and Tape Archive and will honor Harold Prince and George C. Wolfe.

Broadway veteran Christine Dwyer, most known for being one of the longest running Elphaba's in Broadway's WICKED, and also for starring as Jenna in WAITRESS, has joined the cast of The Reading Series' production of MARVIN'S ROOM. 

The Reading Series has announced their next production, Scott McPherson’s multiple award-winning comedic drama MARVIN’S ROOM, which will take place on Wednesday, May 26th at 8:00pm, benefiting The Actors Fund. 

Abingdon Theatre Company has announced three new Artists in Residence for their upcoming 29th Season beginning in the fall. Christine Toy Johnson, Ilda Mason and Matthew McLachlan are set to be the next participants in the Carolyn Halpert Artist in Residence Program which began in 2017.

The “Spotlight on Plays” series just announced the full company for Wendy Wasserstein’s The Sisters Rosensweig starring Jason Alexander, John Behlmann, Lisa Edelstein, Kathryn Hahn, Kathryn Newton, Tracee Chimo Pallero, Chris Perfetti and James Urbaniak.

The latest offering in 42nd Street Moon’s 2021 Moonbeams series is a new virtual production of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill starring Doris Bumpus as the legendary Billie Holiday. Written by Lanie Robertson and directed by Brandon Jackson with musical direction by Marcus McCauley, the play is both a celebration of Holiday as a musical icon and an exploration of her experience as a Black woman in America. Ultimately, it is a testament to the power of the human spirit to persevere in spite of incredible adversity. Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill is available to stream through May 30, 2021. BroadwayWorld caught up with Ms. Bumpus earlier this week in Miami, where she was celebrating her 28th wedding anniversary. The Michigan native grew up singing in church, taking on her first solo at the tender age of five. The actor/singer/producer has her own production company, D’Sunflower Productions, and also has a pair of EP’s on iTunes, including her most recent release, “God Bless the Child,” which pays tribute to Billie Holiday. Her wide-ranging Bay Area theater credits include playing Dorothy Gale in 'The Wiz' and Effie White in 'Dreamgirls,' receiving a Pan Arts Award for Best Lead Actress for both. 42nd Street Moon audiences will remember her as Jewel in 'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.' In conversation, Bumpus is easily chatty and ebullient, and her joy in being a working actor is palpable.
