The Welders -- Washington's only playwrights' collective devoted exclusively to developing and producing new work -- are launching their next production, Switch by Brett Abelman. It runs June 6 - 23 at the Fringe Logan Arts Center.

Last season on Broadway there was a play called Time and the Conways presented at Roundabout Theatre Company. The play hadn't been seen on Broadway since 1937 and after seeing it I understood why. That said, the production had a great look and a very good cast so you could forget about the stodginess of the script. Bethesda, Maryland-based Quotidian Theatre Company's current production of Hobson's Choice bears a resemblance to Time and the Conways because you don't ever see it performed. Unfortunately, the production values – a result of a limited budget – and some questionable casting can't hide all the warts of Harold Brighouse's over 100-year-old script.

As I walked into a performance of Kensington's 'Spelling Bee,' I was admittedly unnerved by the show's conspicuously simple scenic design. After all, the production literally takes place in what looks like a school gymnasium with a hastily put-together stage. Mere moments into the show, however, I realized that I had stepped into one of the most authentic, genuine, and shrewd stagings of 'Spelling Bee' to date.

The New Mel Brook's Musical Young Frankenstein will open at the Apollo Civic Theater in Martinsburg this weekend and features over twenty performers in the area premiere musical adaptation of Mel Brook's horror movie spoof. MET Associate Artistic Director Gene' Fouche' directs Patrick Barlow's adaptation of John Buchan's 1915 novel and the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock which opened on Broadway in 2008 and won the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. The show which The New York Times called, 'theatre at its finest' and the New York Post raved was, 'the most entertaining show on Broadway' ended its New York run after three years and record setting number of performances for a comedy, 1,135.
