Imani Winds to Premiere Andy Akiho's BELOUD, BELOVING, BELONGING May 5 at Merkin Hall

On Thursday, May 5 at 7:30 pm, the 2022 Ecstatic Music series concludes with the world premiere of composer Andy Akiho’s BeLoud, BeLoved, BeLonging by Akiho and 2022 GRAMMY nominees and Kaufman Music Center Artists-in-Residence Imani Winds at Merkin Hall. Inspired by the sound of 2019 protests by immigrant detainees at the Metropolitan Detention Center, the piece has been workshopped with a group of incarcerated young men at Rikers Island and will be performed around the country following the May 5 concert.

Opening their 2021/22 season, the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony and Music Director David Bernard celebrate the return of live audiences with 'Venerable Variations', a concert program encompassing Mozart's Concert Rondo in D for Piano and Orchestra, Brahms's Variations on a Theme by Haydn, and Elgar's Enigma Variations. Rising young pianist Maxim Lando, winner of the 2020 Gilmore Young Artist Award and perhaps best-known for partnering Lang Lang while the Chinese pianist was injured (Lando played the parts for Lang Lang's injured left hand).

More than 140 performers from the KMC community will come together during this multi-day music marathon to share music and support our programs. On November 11, the Kaufman Music Center (KMC) Board of Trustees voted to elect the world-renowned pianist and educator Orli Shaham as Chair. Ms. Shaham has been involved with KMC for nearly 25 years as both a performer at Merkin Hall and a parent of students at the Center's Special Music School and Lucy Moses School. Shahriar Rafimayeri, Chief Information Officer and member of the Executive Committee for Mimecast Ltd, was elected President.
