BWW Review: Billy Porter Sizzles on the Soraya Stage with THE SOUL OF RICHARD RODGERS
by Don Grigware - Jun 5, 2018

When you are dealing with a phenomenal talent such as Billy Porter, expect the unexpected in his performancve onstage. His Tony and Grammy winning tour.de.force as Lola in Kinky Boots is living proof. In his latest touring cabaret/concert show entitled Billy Porter: The Soul of Richard Rodgers, Porter delivers some of his own compositions along with a bevy of show tunes from the collaboration of Rodgers and Hammerstein that truly affected him as he was growing up in Pittsburgh. What stands out is the soul of the man who wrote music that not only moved us but changed the world. Rodgers had that kind of power...and so does Porter. His divergent and unique appearance and vocal style express passion in spades. The 90-minute set is bold, dynamic and full of the rage about resisting the current adminstration and continuing to fight for gay rights in our country.
