MUSE/IQUE Announces Summer Programming Updates For STATES/UNITED

MUSE/IQUE, Pasadena's pioneering live music organization and counter-conventional orchestra, announces additional programming for its inaugural summer series at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens on June 30, July 28 and August 25, 2018. Performances will take place at the Brown Garden Lawn, adjacent to the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art. Tickets are on sale now at http://muse-ique.com/. Aptly titled STATES/UNITED: Mapping Musical America, the three-part series of live events at the Huntington will celebrate and explore the unique American sound.

The first program, LIMITLESS/LENNY, celebrates Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday and the composer's unprecedented innovations to the American sound. The program reflects Bernstein's far-reaching influence from the concert hall and theatre stages, to the small and big screens of television and film. In addition to On the Waterfront, featuring Kitty McNamee's hip-hop ballet inspired by the score, and selections from West Side Story, the program will include "Make Our Garden Grow" from Candide and "Olympic Hymn," performed by L.A. Choral Lab, who will also perform an original work, "Elegy on the Death of Leonard Bernstein." The MUSE/IQUE Orchestra will also perform an original work by Southern California composer Peter Knell, who has a rich history with MUSE/IQUE that began with the ensemble's founding in 2011. Violinist Charles Yang will also perform the third movement Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor, one of the many pieces showcased as part of Bernstein's remarkable Young People's Concerts.

The second stop in the STATES/UNITED journey continues with MOVEMENT/ALOUD!, a celebration of the emergence and varied roots of the American voice. Additional programming includes the performance of John Williams "With Malice Toward None" (from Lincoln) by the MUSE/IQUE orchestra, featuring trumpeter Rob Schaer, as well as songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Previously announced, special guest Norman Lear will open this program with a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and Ballet Hispánico will perform "Carmen.Maquia," a contemporary take on Bizet's beloved opera. Violinist Alyssa Park, the youngest prizewinner in the history of the Tchaikovsky International Competition, and concertmaster of the New West Symphony, will play "It Ain't Necessarily So" by George Gershwin, arranged by Jascha Heifetz. The MUSE/IQUE orchestra, featuring special guest vocalists, will also perform "God Bless America," and showcase the enduring legacy of artists Neil Diamond, Paul Simon, and Gloria Estefan.

U.S./ROUTES, the third and final stop on the STATES/UNITED journey, delves into classic American R&B, soul and pop by exploring iconic locales within America's vast musical landscape. Audiences will be treated to performances of popular American songs such as Duke Ellington's "New World A-Coming," "Hello, Dolly!," (Jerry Herman/Pearl Bailey); "I Feel Good" (James Brown), "Rock With You" (Michael Jackson), "You Send Me" (Sam Cooke), "Personality" (Lloyd Price) and "Higher and Higher" (Jackie Wilson), sung by Broadway's Chester "CH?SS" Gregory. In another tip of the hat to Leonard Bernstein on his actual birthday, pianist Lara Downes will perform "Cool," "Something's Coming," and "Somewhere," as well as the quintessential American folk song, "Shenandoah." American Ballet Theatre will also perform "Serenade After Plato's Symposium," in addition to Twyla Tharp's "Sinatra Suite."

Continuing MUSE/IQUE's tradition of creating collaborative experiences that connect the venue environment to the performance, STATES/UNITED draws inspiration from The Huntington's vast collections of treasures in American art and history in order to create a new kind of map of America - one fashioned from thrilling live music performances.

FREE/FOR ALL - MUSE/IQUE produces one free live music event annually in conjunction with Pasadena's city-wide ArtNight Festival. This family-friendly series is a participatory dance party that serves 5,000-6,000 in the plaza of Paseo Colorado's Garfield Promenade.

MUSE/IQUE COMMUNITY - MUSE/IQUE creates curriculum-based, small group music interactions that engage participants in a deeper experience of the repertoire and ideas behind each event. Formerly known as KIDS/IQUE, these community programs began serving foster and at-risk youth and have expanded to serve senior citizens, families in need, and other local groups at our partnering organizations.
