BWW Review: ROALD DAHL'S WILLY WONKA at Wheelock Family Theatre

Roald Dahl wrote books for the children of his time and it is a wonder that many of his creations have remained as popular and well-loved as they have decades after his death. Although James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The Witches, and The Twits can all trace thematic influence back to Dahl's involvement in World War II, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory seems to be the most heavily-informed by an unquestioning devotion to western industrialization and hope for the germinating seeds of our present-day capitalism. The 1971 movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is indicative of its time not only in its psychedelic colors and film effects but in its Vietnam-Conflict-era praise of Americanized consumerism. While Tim Burton's 2005 film adaptation reclaimed the title of the 1964 book and attempted to be a more faithful translation, its darkness and sterile settings have not garnered the cultural embrace of its predecessor, mainly because (I believe) of the public's common, shifting relationship with and disdain for industrialization and capitalism.

BWW Review: JEKYLL & HYDE at MacTheatre

It's #savage season at MacTheatre, the Fine Arts Academy of McCallum High School. #Savage feels firmly planted in 2019 as that word, as every day vernacular, feels like new-fangled millennial vocabulary. But savage essentially means impossibly confident, self-actualized, and fearless disregard for societal norms. There's plenty of savagery in JEKYLL & HYDE.

BWW Review: JEKYLL & HYDE THE MUSICAL at Sunnyvale Community Players

Sunnyvale Community Players take on a Monster of a show with 'Jekyll & Hyde The Musical'.SCP open's their 51st season with an ambitious musical, a?oeJekyll & Hydea??.  The show, by Frank Wildhorn, Steve Cuden, and Leslie Bricusse spent several years on Broadway and had multiple Tony Award nominations.  This local production under the stage and vocal direction of Raissa Marchetti-Kozlov, along with musical director Benjamin Belew, taps into the classic battle between good and evil as it meanders it's way through the dark and twisted mind of Dr Henry Jekyll and his nemesis alter ego Edward Hyde.

BWW Review: JEKYLL & HYDE at Wilmington Drama League

Leslie Bricusse's book follows the basic outline of the often told tale. The good Dr. Henry Jekyll is a man with a mission - develop a serum that will separate mankind's innate dichotomy of good and evil to cure mental illness (mainly, his father). Dr. Jekyll's desire to test his formula is aggressively rebutted by the hospital (asylum) board of directors. What's a healer/chemist/visionary to do? Take the serum yourself, and see what happens. What happens in the musical version is more of a 'what did you expect' moment rather than a tension filled drama of good intentions gone horribly wrong.
