Franco Ambrosetti Leads All-Star Group on New Album

One of the most revered figures on the European jazz scene, Swiss trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti has maintained a strong affinity for the music since debuting as a leader in 1965 with A Jazz Portrait of Franco Ambrosetti. Now approaching his 78th birthday in December, Ambrosetti is still swinging after all these years, which is very much in evidence by his latest recording, Long Waves. An all-star session recorded in January, 2019 in New York City, Ambrosetti's 28th as a leader overall and second for the Swiss-based Unit Records features celebrated guitarist John Scofield, pianist Uri Caine, bassist Scott Colley and legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette.Together they interact on an intimate level, displaying remarkable chemistry on seven tracks. 'It was like a constant dialogue,' said Ambrosetti of the empathetic session. 'After one rehearsal, I felt like I had played with this group every night for the last five years.'

Friendsical will also enjoy a full run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 1 - 25 August as part of the Assembly Festival programme in The Assembly Rooms' Music Hall.

The day of free jazz performances by student and professional musicians will be held in the Kimmel Center's Perelman Theater and Commonwealth Plaza on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 from noon 9 p.m. This will be the POPS's fifth year presenting this event and the third year in partnership with the Kimmel Center.

A computer wakes up in the year 2035, on the eve of a world socialist revolution… Fighting has broken out all over the globe. For the first time, the U.S. military has used tactical nuclear weapons against its own population - to destroy the Los Angeles Commune. Suddenly, all communication stops. A new player arrives on the scene, a singularity, a computer exploding into consciousness and fighting for sanity through a barrage of conflicting images and downloaded personalities. The play follows the intertwined stories of Hamida, a leader in the South Asian Socialist Alliance, her daughter Sulthana - and Amparo, a leader in the Los Angeles Commune and her son Jesse, a veteran of the South Asian War.

During the inaugural Jazz Philadelphia Summit on Nov. 2 and 3, 2018, regional and national jazz luminaries will gather in Center City Philadelphia to honor the city's deep jazz roots and discuss its future. Musicians, jazz enthusiasts, advocates, funders, and the arts and culture community are gathering at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the University of the Arts for both high-level discussions and hands-on workshops about the art and business of jazz. Sessions will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day. RSVP is required, but registration is free and open to all, available through the Jazz Philadelphia website at www.jazzphiladelphia.org.
