The Paris Opera will present Ambroise Thomas’s “Hamlet” at the Opéra Bastille, in a staging that reexamines Shakespeare’s tragedy through a psychological lens.

I’ve heard the opera a number of times at the Met over the years and this year’s run holds up with the most breathtaking of them. Despite the number of star performances among the magnificent ensemble currently being heard at the Met, the star of the show doesn’t have a single word to say or note to sing. It's the John Dexter production that does it.

John Dexter’s classic production of Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites will return to the Met stage for five performances, starting January 15.

Opera fans across Australia will soon be able to enjoy performances from the Metropolitan Opera, with six new productions set to premiere in Australian cinemas nationally beginning on October 30.

The schedule includes a week entitled From Page to Stage, featuring operas based on works by some of history’s great writers, and a week of fairy-tale operas entitled Once Upon a Time. The 1987 telecast of Puccini’s Turandot, with Eva Marton, Leona Mitchell, Plácido Domingo, and Paul Plishka, will be streamed for the first time on April 17.
