In Italy, theaters are under real estate pressure; their precious locations and spacious buildings are eagerly sought by developers who try to convert valued cultural assets into commercial buildings.  This clash of artistic idealism and commercial opportunism has been dramatized by Italian playwright Alberto Bassetti in 'Dealers of Souls,' a new play whose American premiere will be presented November 12 to 29 by Theater for the New City in collaboration with Kairos Italy Theatre.  It's a supernatural drama in which two men are negotiating the sale of an old theater. The buyer, a clearly corrupt theater entrepreneur, promises to restore it but actually, he intends to turn it into a supermarket. Can his intrigues be stymied by a strange actress who squats in the building, who seems to be part hobo and part phantom of the theater?  Can she save the day?

The event will be held at the Bernie Wohl Center at Goddard Riverside, 647 Columbus Avenue, NY, NY tonight, April 8th 2015, at 6:30pm.

Kairos Italy Theater (KIT), the preeminent Italian theater company in New York, announces the lineup for the third annual IN SCENA! ITALIAN THEATER FESTIVAL NY. This 17-day festival will offer 9 fully staged productions from Italy, among other events and activities. Shows will be presented in all five boroughs of New York. Each show will have at least two performances, one in Manhattan and one in one of the outer boroughs. Performances will run May 4 - 20, 2015. Venues, a calendar of performances and ticketing information will be announced shortly.

Italian realist playwright Carlotta Corradi was awarded the first Mario Fratti Award for Emerging Italian Playwrights on June 24 at the concluding event of the In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, which was held at Italian Cultural Institute, 686 Park Ave. The award recognizes her new play, 'Via dei Capocci,' which was given a staged reading by the Festival the day before at Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue.

The winner of the first Mario Fratti Award for emerging Italian authors, a program of the In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, will be 'Via Dei Capocci' by Carlotta Corradi. The play will be staged as a reading on June 23 at 7:00 PM at Theater for the New City (155 First Ave.) as an event of the Festival.

On Thursday, March 27, KIT (Kairos Italy Theatre) will celebrate NYC World Theatre Day at its production of 'TOSCA AND THE TWO DOWNSTAIRS' (TOSCA E LE ALTRE DUE), a satirical, behind-the-scenes sister-story to Puccini's 'Tosca' as imagined by one of the wittiest and most admired Italian playwright and actresses, Franca Valeri. The production takes stage March 20 to 30 at Dicapo Opera, 184 E 76th Street.

From March 20 to 30, Kairos Italy Theater (KIT) and Dicapo Opera will present 'Tosca e le altre due' (Tosca and The Two Downstairs), a satirical, behind-the-scenes sister-story to Puccini's 'Tosca' as imagined by one of the wittiest and most admired Italian playwright and actresses, Franca Valeri. The piece is directed by Laura Caparrotti, Artistic Director of KIT, and its English translation is by Natasha Lardera. Supertitles are by the prestigious Prescott Studio in Italy. The piece will be staged at Dicapo Opera, 184 E. 76th Street, Manhattan.
