2017 Yale Institute for Music Theatre: Cast and Creative Team Announced

The YALE INSTITUTE FOR MUSIC THEATRE (Mark Brokaw, Artistic Director) announces the creative teams and casting for the two original book musicals, COWBOY BOB, created by Molly Beach Murphy, Jeanna Phillips, and Annie Tippe, book by Molly Beach Murphy, music and lyrics by Jeanna Phillips; and GUMBO, music by Brett Macias and book and lyrics by Christina Quintana, conceived by Brett Macias and Christina Quintana, which are being developed in an intensive two-week summer lab at Yale School of Drama, June 13-24. Scott Frankel is the Artistic Advisor, and Catherine Sheehy is the resident Dramaturg for this year's Institute, which culminates with open rehearsal readings of each project, presented as part of New Haven's International Festival of Arts & Ideas on June 23 and 24.

A cast of award winning performers, friends and colleagues will gather to pay tribute to the life and career of Tony Award winning Broadway legend Tammy Grimes in The Ziegfeld Society's The Unsinkable Tammy Grimes: A Musical Life in Revue, featuring reminiscences and musical numbers from Miss Grimes iconic Broadway musicals. The event will take place on Saturday, April 29th at 3:30 pm at Lang Concert Hall (69th Street between Park and Lexington).

At the most recent BROADWAY BY THE YEAR presentation on March 27, at its usual home of the Town Hall, the 1940s was the sent-up decade from which the evening's performers sang. At a time in the country that currently bears striking and cryptic similarity to that grim period of global history, the resonance of the evening's selections rang eerily. Additionally, they also demonstrated how little the relationship between culture and society has changed over the last seven decades.

It's a celebration! The York Theatre Company, dedicated to the development of new musicals and preserving musical gems from the past, will honor its very own Producing Artistic Director James Morgan, on his 20th anniversary in that position with a Special Spring Concert 'Fun-Raiser' hosted by Charlotte Moore, Artistic Director at the Irish Repertory Theater, and award-winning lyricist/director Richard Maltby, Jr. The special concert evening, directed by Pamela Hunt (Berlin to Broadway) with music direction by Eric Svejcar (Marry Harry) and produced by Bill Castellino (Cagney), is set for Monday evening, April 17, 2017 at The York Theatre Company at Saint Peter's (619 Lexington Avenue).

Jamie deRoy's Friar Membership and her long running Jamie deRoy & friends Variety Show are about the same age. Jamie became a member in 1988 along with Liza Minnelli, Joan Rivers and Brooke Shields. Jamie brought this edition of the show to the Friars Club last night and the Frank Sinatra Dining Room was filled with Friars and Jamie's friends as they dined and were entertained by some of the best in the business.

The last remaining tickets are on sale for the desert's most anticipated annual star-studded concert event, Michael Childer's 'One Night Only', benefiting Jewish Family Services Of The Desert (JFS), to be held Thursday, April 20, 2017 at The McCallum Theatre. This 10th season's theme is 'Hello Jerry' and Michael and cast pay tribute to the incomparable composer Jerry Herman, bringing to the stage music form his popular musicals including Mame, Mack and Mabel, Grand Tour, La Cage Aux Folles and, of course, Hello Dolly. 'Hello Jerry' is directed by Jason Graae with musical direction by Christopher Marlowe. I had the opportunity to sit down with Michael Childer's to talk about this special tenth anniversary production, and more. Here are a few excerpts from that conversation …
