BWW Special: Twickets Lands in Toronto

Twickets is the latest social media tool to emerge in the theatre world, with an aim to help people get tickets to sold out shows without having to pay inflated scalper prices. Already a hit in the UK, a Toronto branch has just launched and is hoping to grow past the 1,000 mark before launching city-wide apps allowing people easy access to all the 'must-see' and sold out shows our great city has to offer. BWW has all the details on this new social media find.

BWW Reviews: ANYTHING GOES is a Delightful Romp at The Princess of Wales

The Roundabout Theatre Company revival production of the hit 1940's musical Anything Goes opened this past Thursday night at The Princess of Wales Theatre, during one of the worst heat waves the city of Toronto had ever had. With ushers dressed in sailor uniforms and clever social media photobooths assembled in the theatre, the production was quickly being touted as a fantastic way to 'beat the heat' and enjoy three hours of blissful airconditionning. But if you're trekking to the theatre in large part to escape the heat you are in for one heck of a surprise - Anything Goes may just be the go-to hit musical of the summer in Toronto.

The 25th Anniversary of the Toronto Fringe Festival wrapped up an incredible ten days in our glorious city this past Sunday night, marking a record year in terms of opening 4 day profit despite challenges such as flooding and power outages cancelling shows and closing down theatres. The city came alive with 148 shows performing in venues across the city, selling 57,182 tickets and returning $433,027 to artists. In addition, there were 200 completely sold-out performances, and many shows which were incredibly close. The joy of Fringing is the hidden gems that you discover, and I'm pleased to report I discovered two this year in Bremen Rock Musical and We Are the Bomb. In addition, there are many excellent shows headed uptown for Best of Fringe which begins in 2 days!

Penny Seats Theatre Presents LITTLE ME, Now thru 7/27

Now in its third year of operation, Ann Arbor's Penny Seats Theatre Company is set to produce its trademark summer show at the West Park Band Shell, 215 Chapin Street in Ann Arbor for three weekends from today, July 11 through July 27.

Starring Canadian darlings Chilina Kennedy and Adam Brazier, early buzz surrounding this production is incredibly promising. The 2013 Dora Awards took place in Toronto on Monday June 25th at The St Lawrence Centre for the Arts. To accommodate demand, the Bluma theatre was also opened up for guests and the awards were live-streamed via 'Doratron'. As in previous years, there was a glamorous VIP ceremony pre-show followed by a post show street party that closed down Front Street. A record number of Doras were given out, with Young People's Theatre's CINDERELLA the runaway hit of the evening with seven awards. BWW is thrilled readers photos from the evening.

This past Tuesday 2013 Bistro Award winner Michael Hughes was reunited on stage with one of his best friend's (Mamma Mia's Callandra Dendias) for a very special cabaret which paid tribute to the music of Academy Award Winner Stephen Schwartz (with some Disney thrown in for good measure). Joining this dynamite duo were special guests Kritty Uranowski, John Connolly, Lindsey Frazier, Joel Cumber and Mark Selby on the piano. BWW has photos from the special night.

Joni Mitchell played a rare concert this past Wednesday night in Toronto as part of the Luminato Festival. The 70 year old singer/songwriter was being honoured in an evening filled with musical luminaries performing her classic songs. Originally scheduled to only do a reading after the pre-arranged performances, Joni delighted the audience by performing three songs in addition to telling some incredible stories.
