Left-Field Anthology is Released
by Christina Mancuso
- Mar 7, 2014
The Year's Best SF 31 was marked by the inclusion of an unprecedented three stories from The Other Half of the Sky, a 2013 anthology of original short stories edited by scientist, author and editor Athena Andreadis - in her very first outing with an anthology published by swashbuckling micro-press Candlemark & Gleam.
'The point of the antho was to have best-of-breed writers sculpt evolved space opera that combines original concepts with literary quality prose, animated by women protagonists. The reviews of the antho as a whole (which routinely used terms like 'fearless' and 'reconstructing the genre') have been incredibly fulfilling but it's equally rewarding to have the authors' craft recognized,' said Andreadis.
Of the 16 original stories in the The Other Half of the Sky, curated by Andreadis and co-editor Kay Holt of Crossed Genres, the three selected for inclusion were 'Finders' by Melissa Scott, 'Bad Day on Boscobel' by Alexander Jablokov and 'The Waiting Stars' by Aliette de Bodard. The three stories constitute 9 percent of The Year's Best SF 31's table of contents, an achievement not matched in memory.
The stream of recognition did not stop there. A fourth story, C. W. Johnson's 'Exit, Interrupted' was chosen for inclusion in The Year's Top Ten SF Tales 6. The anthology appeared on the coveted Locus recommended list. And just today, the anthology contributors discovered that Aliette de Bodard's 'The Waiting Stars' has been nominated for a Nebula Award, an accolade given by genre professionals to their peers.
Kate Sullivan, founder and maestra of Candlemark & Gleam: 'It's nothing short of a delight to have had a part in bringing stories like this to the world - tales that not only entertain but enlighten, showing the full range of human (and alien) experience. This is science fiction as it's meant to be: a glimpse into the best and worst of our lives now, through the lens of the future.'
Chris Moriarty in SFSite, the online portion of Fantasy & Science Fiction: 'The Other Half of the Sky // stands as a 443-page refutation of all Heffalump Hunters who have ever marched in self-referential circles while loudly lamenting the inexplicable failure of women to write 'real' SF. However, I intend it to do double duty in this column...because I can't think of another anthology out this year that so utterly refutes Paul Kincaid's assertion that our genre has succumbed to intellectual inertia.'
The anthology is available in print and electronic formats at Amazon.com or direct from the publisher: http://www.candlemarkandgleam.com/shop/the-other-half-of-the-sky/

The Ivoryton Playhouse's OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY Begins 4/17
by Kelsey Denette
- Apr 4, 2013
Corporate takeovers and romantic comedy make unlikely bedfellows in this though-provoking, fast-talking, satire of the excesses of the 80s, opening in Ivoryton on April 17th Though this play premiered in 1989, it's themes of passion, loyalty , betrayal and greed are sadly, just as relevant today. Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play, Jerry Sterner's brilliant script skewers not only corporate raiders but all of us in our comfortable New England world. What is more important, our community or our pockets?

'Other People's Money,' Jerry Sterner's seriously funny play about Wall Street buccaneers and their hapless victims, will be the first production of the new year for the Hampton Theatre Company in Quogue. A near cult hit (especially with the investment banking crowd) when it first appeared on the New York stage in 1989, 'Other People's Money' tells a cautionary as well as extremely entertaining tale that is as timely in the era of Bernie Madoff and the 1 percent as it was in the go-go '80s. 'Other People's Money' opens on Thursday, January 10, and runs for three weekends, though January 27, at the Quogue Community Hall.
