Kansas City Repertory Theatre announces the Third Annual OriginKC: NEW WORKS FESTIVAL WEEKEND, this Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12, 2018 as part of its umbrella

Welcome To Fear City an exhilarating thrill-ride through the burning Bronx of the '70's that brought hip-hop to life. A powerful story of family and community and how one dangerous choice leads to catastrophic results. Part of KCRep's Origin KC: New Works Festival 2017-2018 this creative new play is a poignant and thought-provoking piece of theatre.

Kansas City Repertory Theatre wraps up its 2017/18 season with its OriginKC: NEW WORKS FESTIVAL. Entering its third season, the OriginKC: NEW WORKS FESTIVAL, running April 27 through May 27, 2018, positions Kansas City as a major player and national center for the cultivation and production of new works, while offering theatre artists from across the country the financial, creative and artistic resources required to develop vital, diverse works of theatre.

The lineup of writers has been announced for 'Expecting (The Worst)', a night of new plays at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater on February 27th at 7pm. The night will feature new works written by Kara Lee Corthron ( AliceGraceAnon at New George's), Jessica Dickey (Steppenwolf's The Rembrandt ) , Brett C. Leonard ( The Long Red Road at The Goodman Theater) , Ren Santiago ( The Siblings Play at Cherry Lane) and Daniel Talbott ( Slipping at Rattlestick). Casting will be announced at a later date.

Following a successful summer run of Aaron Posner's play Life Sucks, Company of Fools' 22nd season of theatre continues this fall with a production of BRIGHT HALF LIFE by playwright Tanya Barfield. Company of Fools' Interim Artistic Director, Ilana Becker, will direct the play, which runs Sept. 27-Oct. 14, 2017, at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey.

Though it contains the admirable and relevant racial contemporary message the playwright, Kara Lee Corthron, intended, Welcome to Fear City suffers from a lack of a coherent vision and a dragging pace unsuited to the fast-talking, non-stop world of the 1970's Bronx in which the play is set.

Welcome to Fear City, premiering at the Contemporary American Theater Festival in Shepherdstown, WV, shambles along amiably, looking as if it has no more greater object than to be a loose black family dramedy set forty years ago. That is, until it dawns on you that the play's ambition is to be nothing less than a snapshot of a time and place where a lot of things happened, and one vitally important thing, hip hop, came into being.
