Odyssey Opera Presents Five-Hour Concert of Wagner's RIENZI, 9/15

ODYSSEY OPERA, a new, Boston-based opera company dedicated to presenting adventurous repertoire, debuts Sunday, September 15th at Boston's Jordan Hall offering a five-hour concert performance of Wagner's rarely heard opera “Rienzi.” In celebration of the bicentennial of Richard Wagner's birth (1813-1883), Odyssey salutes one of history's greatest and most controversial opera composers in a spectacular Wagnerian event performed in true Bayreuth fashion. Disney's THE LION KING Opens Tonight at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center

The Charlotte return of Disney's THE LION KING opens tonight, Thursday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Belk Theater for a limited engagement of four weeks through September 1. In Charlotte, THE LION KING plays Tuesday through Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

NPR's FROM THE TOP Kicks Off 2013-14 National Radio Taping Tour Today

From the Top with host Christopher O'Riley, the preeminent showcase for young musicians, announces its 2013-2014 National Radio Taping Tour for recording its popular NPR radio program. The tour includes live taping events at From the Top's home at New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall in Boston, as well as the National Music Museum in Vermillion, South Dakota, the new Bing Concert Hall at Stanford University, and the historic Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga, Tennessee. From the Top will also tape at Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado and at the Virginia Arts Festival in Norfolk, Virginia.

Baritone Thomas Hampson looks forward to giving the world premiere performance of a new song commission from one of America's principal younger composers, Mark Adamo. Scored for baritone and string quartet, Adamo's Aristotle (2013) was written for Hampson to sing with the Jupiter String Quartet. After giving its world premiere performance together at UC Davis tonight, April 24, they will tour the new work to Boston's Celebrity Series (Fri, April 26) and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, where they will present its New York premiere on Sunday, April 28.

ACME, the American Contemporary Music Ensemble performs tonight, April 18 at 7:30pm. presented by The Morgan Library and Museum (225 Madison Avenue) and the Polish Cultural Institute New York. ACME pays homage to the late, largely unsung Polish composer Mieczys?aw Weinberg with an elegiac chamber music program that includes his exquisite Piano Quintet Op. 18, plus Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67 and selections from Henryk Gorecki's String Quartet No. 3.
