BWW Reviews: SPAMALOT an Evening of Great Grand Silliness
by Frank Benge - Apr 19, 2015

The labeled ingredients in the canned mystery meat known as Spam are chopped pork shoulder meat, ham meat, salt, water, modified potato starch as a binder, sugar, and sodium nitrite as a preservative. There are almost as many ingredients in the Georgetown Palace Theatre production of Monty Python's SPAMALOT, which includes a hard-working cast, clever songs, and a script featuring the witty and politically incorrect British humor of Monty Python. Monty Python's SPAMALOT is a musical comedy adapted from the 1975 film 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail ' which was a highly irreverent parody of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Monty Python is considered both parody and satire. There are abundant examples of both at work in this production. Among the things parodied are Broadway musicals (in general) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (specifically) repeatedly. The original production was the winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical.

STAGE TUBE: On This Day for 3/17/15- SPAMALOT
by Nicole Rosky - Mar 17, 2015

Today in 2005, Spamalot opened at the Shubert Theatre, where it ran for 1575 performances. Monty Python's Spamalot is a musical comedy 'lovingly ripped off from' the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Like the film, it is a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian Legend, but it differs from the film in many ways, especially in its parodies of Broadway theatre. Eric Idle, a member of the Monty Python team, wrote the musical's book and lyrics and collaborated with John Du Prez on most of the music. The original 2005 Broadway production, directed by Mike Nichols, won three Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical of the 2004-2005 season and received 14 Tony Award nominations.

BWW Reviews: Hallelujah. The Collegiate Chorale Brings MESSIAH (Not) to Carnegie Hall
by Richard Sasanow - Dec 20, 2014

A funny thing happened on the way to Handel's MESSIAH: That would be Monty Python's LIFE OF BRIAN, transformed from the film by Eric Idle (the jokes) and John Du Prez (the music) into NOT THE MESSIAH (HE'S A VERY NAUGHTY BOY). This comic oratorio resulted in a very jolly evening, which The Collegiate Chorale brought to Carnegie Hall, under conductor and director Ted Sperling.
