BWW Review: THE CAPTIVE QUEEN, Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

A retitled production of John Dryden's 1675 play Aureng-zebe, The Captive Queen continues the Globe's winter season and acts as a swansong for Northern Broadsides' Barrie Rutter. The artistic director takes the role of the Emperor and also directs for the company for the final time. A rarely performed play, this project has been in the works for some time and is something of a labour of love for Rutter and his company.

For theatre lovers in our area, we always look forward to what our theatre companies have in store for us in their upcoming seasons. We look to see if there are any trends that stand out to us as audience members. We also see growth in many companies with each new season of shows. Anyone that's been following DC theatre for a while will notice how things have changed in the last twenty or thirty years. One of the biggest examples of this would be the clean up and revitalization of 14th Street, which had direct implications for Studio Theatre and Source.

The Poets' Theatre Presents KING ARTHUR

The Poets' Theatre has entered into an exciting partnership with the Henry Purcell Society of Boston and the Arcadia Players to present Henry Purcell's and John Dryden's rarely performed Restoration Era Musical Spectacle, the semi-opera, King Arthur, for one performance only on Saturday November 19th at 7:30pm at the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul,138 Tremont Street, Boston (opposite the Park Street Station at the top of Boston Common).

ALEXANDER'S FEAST to Open LA Master Chorale 'Hidden Handel' Project

The Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC), led by Artistic Director Grant Gershon, transforms Walt Disney Concert Hall into a festive banquet hall in the ancient Persian city of Persepolis for two immersive performances of eminent director Trevore Ross's semi-staged production of Handel's Alexander's Feast, created for the LA Master Chorale to launch its multi-year 'Hidden Handel' project on Saturday, April 16, 2 pm, and Sunday, April 17, 2016, 7 pm.

New York Premiere of L'AMANT ANONYME Set for 59E59 Theaters

59E59 Theaters will welcome the return of the little OPERA theatre of ny with the New York premiere of L'Amant Anonyme, adapted and directed Philip Shneidman from the opera by Chevalier de Saint-Georges, with a libretto by Desfontaines after Mme. de Genlis. Conducted by Elliot Figg with Art Direction by Sanford Biggers, L'Amant Anonyme begins performances on Saturday, March 12 for a limited engagement through Sunday, March 20. The performance schedule is Tuesday - Thursday at 7:15 PM; Friday & Saturday at 8:15 PM; and Sunday at 3:15 PM. Performances are at 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues). Tickets are $35 ($24.50 for 59E59 Members). Dragon Theatre to Celebrate Aphra Behn in October

This October offers an unusual theatergoing experience - see the fictionalized story of pioneering English female playwright Aphra Behn in Or, by Liz Duffy Adams at the Dragon Theatre in Redwood City, then see The Rover, one of Aphra Behn's most successful plays, at Shotgun Players in Berkeley as a part of their season of plays by women.

MRS. ROOSEVELT FLIES TO LONDON Begins April 15 at King's Head Theatre

HINT OF LIME PRODUCTIONS, in association with The King's Head Theatre, presents MRS ROOSEVELT FLIES TO LONDON. Written and performed by ALISON SKILBECK, directed by LUCY SKILBECK. The show runs April 14 to May 9 at The King's Head Theatre. Press night April 15 at 7.00pm.

Tony-Winner Douglas Hodge to Return to Broadway as CYRANO

Roundabout Theatre Company has just announced that Tony® Award winner Douglas Hodge will star in a new Broadway production of Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, with a translation by Ranjit Bolt and directed by Jamie Lloyd. Cyrano de Bergerac will begin previews on September 14, 2012 and open officially on October 11, 2012 at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway (227 West 42nd Street). This will be a limited engagement through November 25, 2012. The full cast & design team will be announced soon.
