'As terrifying as anything I've seen,' is how a young fellow describes the natural phenomenon that gives playwright Simon Stephens' solo piece Sea Wall its title.

No doubt about it, A Bronx Tale - the musical version of Chazz Palminteri's original 1989 one man show (he played some 18 characters in the original work) that ultimately led to a 1993 film directed by Robert DeNiro - is one engaging night of theater, telling an intriguing story of a boy who grows to manhood on the mean streets of The Bronx, in the shadow of local wiseguy/mob kingpin Sonny, played here by Joe Barbara with chilling authenticity and palpable, if oily, charm.

You can pass laws, spread the wealth and educate the masses all you want, but perhaps the quickest way to dissolve the barriers between established classes is simply through giving in to raw passion.

SEA WALL / A LIFE runs through Sunday, March 31 with an official press opening on Thursday, February 14.

It's a homecoming of sorts for Joey Barreiro this week as he and his castmates from the national tour of A Bronx Tale - the Broadway musical that's based on a one-man show created by actor/writer Chazz Palminteri - encamp at Nashville's Tennessee Performing Arts Center for a week-long stand.

Broadway has grown accustomed to her face, and we just can't get enough.  Lincoln Center Theater (under the direction of Andre Bishop) has announced that Laura Benanti, who recently garnered rave reviews for her performance as Eliza Doolittle, will continue in that role in its award-winning production of Lerner & Loewe's MY FAIR LADY, directed by Bartlett Sher, through Sunday, July 7 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater (150 West 65 Street).      

'You take a mackerel, grill it, drizzle a little lemon on it, serve it up with a huge glass of white zinfandel, and one doesn't feel quite like blowing one's brains out anymore, does one?' observes a husband when considering the prospect of another evening's dinner with his wife of nearly twenty-five years.

New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) announced today that Jeremy O. Harris (Slave Play, "Daddy") and Heidi Schreck (the Broadway-bound What the Constitution Means to Me), the playwrights behind NYTW's two sold-out fall productions, will co-host the NYTW 2019 Gala celebrating 40 Years of New York Theatre Workshop and honoring Founding Trustee Stephen Graham.

As a massive Roald Dahl fan, this reviewer secretly hopes his entire catalog will wind up as Broadway shows someday. For now, we have Matilda The Musical (London 2010, Broadway 2013) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (London 2013, Broadway 2017). The stage version of the 1964 novel that has had two film adaptations does a very good job of marrying the original text with many of the beloved songs from the 1971 film. It also doesn't shy away from the fact that Willy Wonka invites five children into his place of business, and four of them may end up dead or disfigured by the end of the day. The script has some updates for the time period, but in this age of helicopter parenting and raising your kids practically encased in bubble wrap, it's kind of nice see this show lean into the darker aspects of the story, which are the hallmarks of Roald Dahl's writing.

MCC Theater announced today the complete cast and creative team for the first show at their new 52nd Street home: the New York Premiere production of The Light, written by Loy A. Webb, and directed by Logan Vaughn.

By The Way, Meet Vera Stark began performance on January 29 and opens on Tuesday, February 19 on the Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center. The production is a limited engagement through March 10, 2019. Get a first look at the production below!

The sensational national touring company of WICKED has returned to Salt Lake City with a star-powered run at the Eccles Theater.

On a very chilly Tuesday night, Fiddler on the Roof opened and warmed the hearts of the enthusiastic audience at the Fabulous Fox.  This Broadway revival was full of new energy and more emotion than expected with this beloved classic.

Flying in the face of the dreadful 21st Century practice of making extreme cuts and revisions to classic musicals by deceased authors in the belief that they would offend contemporary sensibilities if presented as originally written, director Bartlett Sher has spent a good part of the last two decades mounting elegant and thoughtful revivals that smooth over potential trouble spots by, believe it or not, doing what directors are assigned to do... interpret and direct.
