by Don Grigware - Mar 29, 2019

What an incredible week this has been! First Matilda the Musical and now Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, both based on Roald Dahl's books. It most definitely is a world of pure imagination for kids of all ages. Currently at the Hollywood Pantages through April 14, The Chocolate Factory is a uniquely mesmerizing tale of little Charlie Bucket, who, like Matilda, is a genius who can create something out of nothing. Willy Wonka (Noah Weisberg) desperately wants an heir to his Chocolate Factory, so

BWW Review: FIDDLER ON THE ROOF at The Majestic Theatre San Antonio
by Ashley Corbaley - Mar 28, 2019

'Miracle of Miracles!' Since its Broadway debut in 1964, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has touched the hearts of millions with its story of faith, tradition, and family that has transcended generations. The show centers on Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman as he tries to marry off his eldest daughters.  With music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein, this nine-time Tony Award-winning show features memorable songs such as  'Matchmaker, Matchmaker,' 'To Life,' and 'Sunrise, Sunset.' You might be familiar with the songs and story but you haven't fully experienced it until you see the National Tour of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, now playing at the Majestic Theatre of San Antonio.

BWW Review: A BRONX TALE at the National Theatre is Disappointingly Disjointed
by Sam Abney - Mar 28, 2019

The first words sung in A Bronx Tale, the tonally uneven and musically disappointing touring show that opened at D.C.'s National Theatre on Tuesday, are literally "this is a Bronx tale." The artistic subtleties don't get much better from there, as the musical (based on a movie based on a one-man show) proceeds to tackle issues from morality to racism with all the delicateness of a mobster smashing someone's head in with a baseball bat. Everything about this production is underwhelming from the performances to the design to the direction and choreography. Ultimately, A Bronx Tale is the perfect example of why we should stop adapting movies into musicals.

When the first production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF opened on Broadway, many wondered how it would do post war and what people would think of the strong history of the Jewish people of Russia. It didn't take long to find out that the show was a hit amongst many theater goers and has made history itself as the history of the story takes us back to when things were very different. BWW was able to chat recently with Carol Beaugard who plays Yente the matchmaker as FIDDLER ON THE ROOF prepared to make a stop in San Antonio, Texas at the famous Majestic Theatre.

by Barnett Serchuk - Mar 25, 2019

When the Rodgers and Hart musical, 'I Married An Angel,' opened in May of 1938, choreography by way of Mr. George Balanchine, Brooks Atkinson, the critic of the New York Times, rained applause down: '...George Balanchine has designed his most gorgeous ballet patterns...the central part of the Angel is played by Vera Zorina, whose grace as a dancer is informed with imagination and awareness.

BWW Review: Encores! I MARRIED AN ANGEL Is A Heavenly Sip of Vintage Rodgers and Hart
by Michael Dale - Mar 24, 2019

One of the quirky charms of the musicals that packed Broadway houses during early decades of the 20th Century, was the practice of allowing a stray remark that has nothing to do with anything that's going on to serve as the cue for a novelty song that has nothing to do with anything that's going on.

BWW Review: Suzan-Lori Parks' WHITE NOISE Uses 'A Far-Out Idea' To Get Us Talking About Hard Realities

And as we look out at what the country has become in recent years, and how social media has illuminated what we have always been, it's necessary to have artists like Suzan-Lori Parks around to keep us thinking, and talking, about what we can aspire to.
