Ralph Stanley, a patriarch of Appalachian music who with his brother Carter helped expand and popularize the genre that became known as bluegrass, died Thursday from difficulties with skin cancer. He was 89.

Singer Kaitlyn Baker, who has been attracting attention since the release of her singles “Burn” and “Coal Train,” will bring her “coal country” style of music to the WDVX “Blue Plate Special” in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Wednesday, March 16. The program broadcasts Monday through Saturday in front of a live audience at the Knoxville Visitors Center.

Country Music Hall of Fame inductees the Oak Ridge Boys presented Jim Halsey with the award, which comes in recognition for his lifetime commitment to music and music education.
