I understood that this was a fantastic play, but I didn't understand how the witty dialogue could be the uproarious comedy that my theater teacher promised me it was. Orta's play is based on the style of folk tales and the real-life freshwater river dolphins--the "boto". Her work certainly reads with a mystical vibe and mythical undertones, and it is no surprise that she has a background in poetry.

Chronicling the lives of two sisters in a Brazilian fishing village who are struggling to find their own happily-ever-after while bound to family honor and tradition, the play incorporates traditional Brazilian folklore and lyrical storytelling to weave a magical tale of love, fate and transformation. The River Bride received its world premiere in 2016 at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and has been performed at the Arizona Theatre Company, Halycon Theatre and Su Teatro over the past three years.
