Stages Repertory Theatre is pleased to present, in conjunction with the 2nd Annual Sin Muros: A Latinx Theatre Festival, Marisela Treviño Orta's The River Bride, running from January 23 through February 10, 2019. Chronicling the lives of two sisters in a Brazilian fishing village who are struggling to find their own happily-ever-after while bound to family honor and tradition, the play incorporates traditional Brazilian folklore and lyrical storytelling to weave a magical tale of love, fate and transformation. The River Bride received its world premiere in 2016 at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and has been performed at the Arizona Theatre Company, Halycon Theatre and Su Teatro over the past three years.

Marisela Treviño Orta studied poetry at the University of San Francisco, and became the Resident Poet of El Teatro Jornalero!, a social justice theatre company comprised of Latinx immigrants. Her first play, Braided Sorrow, went on to win the 2006 Chicano/Latino Literary Prize in Drama and the 2009 Pen Center USA Literary Award in Drama. In 2011, Orta began writing her cycle of grim fairy tales for adults, inspired by Latinx mythology and folklore, of which The River Bride is one, along with Alcira and Wolf at the Door.

Hailing from Brownsville, TX, Jerry Ruiz makes his Stages directing debut following an impressive lineup of directing credits including world and regional premieres at Second Stage, Rattlestick Theatre, Denver Center, Clubbed Thumb, and Hartford TheatreWork, and as assistant director on the Broadway production of La Boheme directed by Baz Luhrmann.

The River Bride's cast, made up entirely of Latinx actors, includes Adonis Banuelos, Patricia Duran, Luis Galindo, Melissa Molano, Jennifer Paredes, and Luis Quintero. Presented in conjunction with Sin Muros, The River Bride will continue Stages' commitment to supporting and cultivating emerging Latinx voices.

Lighting Designer Renee Brode and Properties Designer Jodi Bobrovsky have transformed Stages' Yeager Theater utilizing the fable-like elements of the play to create an ethereal atmosphere anchored by the flowing waters of the story's setting - the Amazon.

Performance times are Wednesday - Thursday at 7:30pm, Friday at 8:00pm, Saturday at 2:30pm and 8:00pm, and Sunday at 2:30pm.

Regular tickets start at $25 with savings for groups of 6 or more To purchase, call the Stages Box Office at 713.527.0123 or reserve online at www.stagestheatre.com.
