It's true what they say; the classics never do go out of style. That's particularly true with 1927's The Jazz Singer. The first feature-length 'sound film,' Alan Crosland's The Jazz Singer made history with its use of synchronized sound, however it's also remembered for its controversial use of blackface. Now, almost a century later, audience members get the opportunity to re-discover such a significant production in an entirely new medium.

WaterTower Theatre will round out its 2019-2020 season with a special limited-engagement, concert-style production of the inspiring 1960s musical Golden Boy. Adapted from the 1930s drama by Clifford Odets, and featuring a book by Odets and William Gibson, Golden Boy tells the story of Joe Wellington, a young black man trying to rise from the Harlem ghetto as a prizefighter. Wellington, originated on Broadway in 1964 by the iconic Sammy Davis, Jr., is enticed by the boxing world's promise of fame and fortune, but he makes one critical mistake: falling for his manager's white girlfriend, Lorna.

Sometimes a trip to the Emergency Room is so awful that it's just made for Theater of the Ridiculous.  That's the premise of 'Singin' in the E.R.,' the newest musical by Ruby Lynn Reyner, a star of John Vaccarro's Playhouse of the Ridiculous who has been called a female Jerry Lewis.

The show will pay a beautiful tribute to Roberto Gomez Bolanos and his most famous creation, our dear El Chavo, in a great production in the best Broadway style. The staging promises to surprise fans of the show - and the general public - with original choreography by Gabriel Malo, unpublished libretto by music director Fernanda Maia and direction by Ze Henrique de Paula. Chaves - Um Tributo Musical has its premiere scheduled for August 23 at Teatro Opus (Shopping Villa-Lobos), in Sao Paulo.

Earlier this year, on April 22, The Phantom of the Opera, reached a milestone that no other Broadway show has even come near. Phantom, the longest-running show in Broadway history, became the first Broadway show EVER to reach #13,000 performances. This is just one of many incredible achievements made by the show since it opened on Broadway over three decades ago.

James Kaplan, noted biographer and author of the upcoming book, "Irving Berlin: New York Genius," will be guest speaker at Westport Country Playhouse's Sunday Symposium on July 21, following a 3 p.m. performance of "Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin," a musical tribute to the legendary songwriter.

On behalf of the Gisela Johnson and the Johnson family, we are informing you that Emmy winning comedic actor, Arte Johnson has passed at 1:45am, July 3rd, 2019.  There are no services planned.  His ashes will be taken to his home away from home in HI, were a private ceremony will be held.

The New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players' annual Gala will honor multiple TonyAward-winning author-composer and show business tour de force Rupert Holmes, Wednesday, June 12, at the city's The Players, 916 Gramercy Park South, starting at 6:30 PM. It may not be the 1950's El Morocco or La Martinique (and surely doesn't cost as much), but this special eventing at The Beach Cafe definitely left the Saturday late night audience feeling they were sharing that same nostalgic supper club experience listening to the romantic and Jazz infused vocals of Nicolas King.
